Raspberry Pi 2 quadcore-chip
Does anyone know where to get real cheap ir modules or ir receivers for the pi 2?

Have a few spare mce rc6 remotes without usb ir receivers and would like to set them with pi 2's that i purchase for friends.

Thank you, will look into this. Wonder does it work out of the box as such with rc6 remotes and openelec.

A bit of googling would tell you the answer to that.

It's a TSOP4838 and yes, it works on openelec right out of the box.
Heres mine:

Thanks, Milhouse and noggin. A protocol limitation makes more sense, clears up the dubious phrasing on wikipedia, and gives me a more useful direction in which to look for details.

Nope. Not on any ARM or OpenGL ES platform.

How about external usb sound cards on pi 2? Will it work better than on Pi 1? Never got that working in a satisfying way. You had to use dvdplayer which was not optimal.

If you use a USB (or I2S) sound card, then dvdplayer will be used automatically.
dvdplayer has some limitations due to cpu usage on Pi1. That is not an issue on Pi2 when CPU usage is low with dvdplayer even with hard video files.

Personally I always use dvdplayer even though I use HDMI output for audio.

Wonderful!
Which distro seems the most stable at the moment between OSMC and Openelec?
Reply
If it is not already obvious OSMC is still in Alpha 4 testing with WIFI and BT configuration having to be setup via SSH commands, this is not at all Newb friendly. Ethernet works properly tho and OSMC when it reaches a stable release looks like it will be a wee bit faster, especially on the single core RPi 1.

Openelec 5.0.3 is a stable mature polished product, and so it should be with the far greater time period it has been with us.

Reply
I am puzzled, how can OSMC be faster when openelec is on version 5? is it because openelec caters for more hardware? also what about Millhouse builds?

This remote with ir works superb in kodi and it works out of the box on Rpi and the reception is better then with tsop only.
