Vero OSMC
BTW Karnagious I just did not like your analogy earlier, a better subject would have been more appropriate on a public forum.

So its actually Vero that should be thanking the Kodi devs for ironing out a lot of the bugs on the iMX6 platform that has the devs upset.
Well thats understandable then. But isn't that the nature of Open Source code ?

If someone says something grey and tries to sell it as white, I am going to sell it as black.

My mistake... Sorry for the confusion.
Hi everyone,

I have been looking at the Vero, and saw this forum/post.

Why are so many people "against" the product? Is it all the about the price?
To me using $200 or $140 on two different product shouldn't really matter, if you are looking at a product you assume you are going to have a good amount of years.

Am i missing something here? Smile

I don't think people are "against" the product. It's just that the hardware platform it basically a cubox-i with an added remote, and for some of us the difference in price between buying a cubox-i and a vero is hard to justify personally, and feel other customers should be informed.

Regardless of which of the two platforms you choose, the compromises and technical limitations of the platform are the same. Depending on your needs, neither a cubox-i or Vero may be perfect -- say if you want to bitstream with full 23.976 video, or deinterlace some live TV signals. And in some cases, a faster (yet cheaper) cubox-i will be able to interlace some higher framerate content.

But either way, you need to make the decision, if the remote, and the guaranteed support offered by Vero is worth the extra cost compared to a cubox-i. If the limitations of the platform don't bother you, then the added cost of a Vero may make sense for your needs.

This, so much this! As long as consumers are making an informed purchase and understand the price, performance and suitability of a device to their needs, all is well.
I don't get all the bashing and hating here, Vero does not violate the GPL and nor do they preload Vero with piracy addons or pretend to be an official Kodi product, so who do they hurt?

Almost all that have been said here can also be said about WeTek Play and no one seem to be bashing the maker of it like people here are bashing on the Vero, it is discrimination because WeTek Play is a sponsor or just a few people who have something personal against Sam Nazarko or his commercial endeavors? As I see it both WeTek Play and the Vero are overpriced if you only look at it the hardware, but they both add value via customized firmware and offering end-user support without just referring to Kodi. Yes the Vero is more expensive than a SolidRun's CuBox-i2 or CuBoxTV, so what, probably neither it or WeTek Play is really marketed at you as Kodi enthusiasts, so just don't buy one!

(Like wrxtasy, I have no connection to the WeTek Play, Vero business, nor OSMC development. I don't own or use a Vero or WeTek Play, nor would I buy or recommend either of them).

There's no secret that the port was initially done by Stéphan "wolfgar" Rafin for many i.MX6 based devices, you can read more about it here:
http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=161793
http://stephan-rafin.net/blog/
https://github.com/wolfgar

You can read on the above linked thread and his blog that more developers joined as interest for the port grew and eventually it was mainlined
http://stephan-rafin.net/blog/2014/02/23...anization/
http://stephan-rafin.net/blog/2014/09/25...for-i-mx6/

Vero is not mentioned anywhere in the above sources, but SolidRun's CuBox-i is mentioned a lot.

SolidRun as OEM manufacturers Cubox-i2 for rebranding to Vero, and companies who uses OEM parts do not normally disclose that openly:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Original_eq...nufacturer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebranding

Sam's contributions was added later after mainlining, not before, as you can see here:
https://github.com/xbmc-imx6/xbmc/graphs/contributors
https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/graphs/contributors

Using OEM parts and rebranding hardware is not uncommon business practices, not even in by companies basing products on open source.
Well now I'm curious about the Wetek Play. I'd seen it as another option but haven't looked into it too much. All I know about it is that it has an AmLogic AML8726-MX chip. I've seen some similar devices like the odroid-c1 that are based on a slightly different or more recent AmLogic chip like the S802.

What device is the Wetek Play a rebranded version of?
Hehe... The tweeter thread where I found out Vero = cubox Wink
https://twitter.com/samnazarko/status/52...1605694464

You have to love the "we are looking at using their case" Big Grin

So yeah, no question cubox/imx6 was there before Vero. There is actually no way the Vero would be imx6 otherwise...

Keep in mind that a guarantee is only as good as its backer. Hopefully Vero customers get the full 3 years they've been promised, but a lot can change in that time. Personally, I'd be concerned that the non-OSMC i.MX6 developers move on to greener pastures. I don't think Sam or his team can advance the project on their own.

The problem with Kodi is that it's so complex that it can't be packaged into a retail customer-friendly product. The consumer-base is going to be techies and there's no reason for a techie to pay a 100% markup on a box to run Kodi. A Raspberry Pi will do the job for ~$60 bucks, a CuBox i2 or Amazon Fire TV for ~$99, or a Chromebox for ~$160. If you want to support OSMC by buying a VERO, great! But there's no other rational reason to get one, IMO.

It's nothing against Sam personally, he's a businessman and he's out to make a profit which is fair enough, however if someone was selling a Chromebox with Openelec pre-installed for $300 you'd get the exact same reaction.

The wetek play with integrated sat tuners is a bit of a bargain if you ask me - the SOC may not be be great, but I doubt you could even get a dvb to ip dual sat tuner for that price, let alone one which runs kodi.
