Kodi Media Player Options with 3D MVC & HD Audio
A newbie question so apologies if answer is obvious! I have a number of 3D blu Ray rips in m2ts format (made via tsmuxer). Reason for this format is that they play directly on my Samsung tv, whilst they don't play in 3D in an mkv container for some reason. I'm interested in getting a raspberry pi to use with other tv, can it play 3D frame packed mvc from m2ts or does it need to be repackaged into an mkv container? Thanks!

Hopefully I am, a review unit. Waiting for confirmation from mirror88.

You should be able to drop the m2ts into MKVMerge and create a MVC MKV. But, may be able to play m2ts as is in 3D; simply try naming the file Moviename.3D.MVC.m2ts (if latest Kodi 16 firmware), or Moviename.3D.SBS.m2ts if OpenELEC 5.95.5.

Sorry to be that guy but my experience with the raspberry pi 2 is that it sucks. It sucks so much that I have gone back to a a Bluetimes 1186 box that I thought sucked... until I used the rp2

Openelec corrupts itself every chance it gets. I never power it down, but if there's a power outage, guess what? CORRUPTION. Another time the box seemed fine but I was unable to login to my youtube account. It got corrupted and the only way to fix it was a complete reinstall. Its no fun to have to regular reinstall the whole OS on the sd card. The ease of use is pretty crap too and lacks basic things like 1.5x FF or sound during FF as well

Don't get me wrong the rp2 has its strengths but I find it hard to call it anymore than 'hobby box' at this point in time. I really appreciate this thread but the rating you gave the rp2 is completely misleading

It does do HD audio, and doesn't have to be bitstreaming, as decoding is the same thing (ATMOS and DTS:X notwithstanding), with full uncompressed quality. Add 3D ISO and MVC MKV support (only non-Kodi M8R had this), plus a seamless, integrated Kodi experience (no external player), and RPi2 is pretty darn perfect.

If you give the RPi2 a A+ then i think the VidOn box deserve a A+.

A+ device is suppose to have all the features,RPi2 is missing one important feature, which is Bitstreaming, that alone doesn't make a A+ device.

Maybe the Zidoo could be a A+ device, but for now none of those listed devices deserve a A+ or A- ratings.

Just my 2 cents.

Unfortunately VidOn box doesn't work as it was advertised, many issues with 3D ISO. For the price it would be an OK box, but GPL violation when charging annual subscription for "enhanced" features is really terrible

Just for accuracy - the Pi and Pi 2 both support bitstreaming of lossy Dolby Digital/AC3 and DTS audio, it is just HD Audio codecs they don't bitstream (DTS HD-MA/HRA and Dolby True HD, and their new variants Dolby Atmos and DTS:x) Unlike lots of boxes which don't support any bitstreaming, it is just HD Audio bitstreaming that the Pi / Pi 2 doesn't support.

However the Pi 2, unlike many boxes that don't bitstream HD Audio, DOES output 8 channel / 24bit PCM at up to 96kHz and 4 channel / 24 bit up to 192kHz. Now that the new dev OE builds include lossless decode support for Dolby True HD and DTS HD MA/HRA you get lossless HD Audio output as PCM for 48kHz and 96kHz tracks. Which is all but a handful (192kHz 5.1 and 7.1 is vanishingly rare on Blu-ray because the bitrate required is so high) Sure you don't get bitstreaming, so the lights don't come on on your amp, and potentially some metadata-based processing in your amp may be compromised slightly (5.1 to 7.1 up conversion?) but for many of us lossless decoding to PCM is more than good enough.

The real limitation at the high-end is that Dolby Atmos and DTS:x won't be supported. But if you are spending that money on an AVR and speakers, you are likely to be able to spend a couple of quid more to buy a Celeron x86 box(which will support them)

A bit of topic maybe but, what's the best way to rip a 3d bluray at present. ( seeing you guys are the specialists in 3D)

I've used makemkv to get mvc mkv in the past, but i would like to rip the entire disc.
Sony KDL-46HX853 and Sony STR-DN1050

SVS SB2000 Subwoofer
Nvidia shield TV running SPMC
Pi3 running LibreELEC

How very strange.I have not had a single problem - it just works. No idea what you did to your Pi2. Mine has been running since I bought it, I never switch it off.

But then again, I have not had any Powercuts. Shame you feel that way, but it is the absolute opposit to my experience.

The only thing that is missing is ATMOS - and that was not part of the chart on the first page and probably only of interes for a select few.

As for not bitstreaming - you get the same sound through your speakers - no more , no less. So why care if it is decoded by the Pi or the AVR?
The result is the same - except for ATMOS and DTS:x

You can watch 3D content without ghosting and audioproblems. So for all practical reasons it deserves A+

There's actually a copy entire disc option in make mkv as well :-)

there is some difference, if you lost metadate you lost some function:
Dolby Dynamic Range Control (DRC)
DTS drc scale control
DTS Voice Clarification

and with DTS-HD 7.1 you lost virtual back surround:

try 2013 DTS Blu-Ray Demo Disc Vol.17:
- Dredd – DTS Sound Check DTS-HD MA 7.1
- The Hunger Games – DTS Sound Check DTS-HD MA 7.1

Try With 5.1 setup speaker and player support DTS-HD:test kodi decoding then with passthrough enabled to the receiver, there are big difference.
You lose virtual back surround speakers and DTS / Ampi DSP optimization.

Try passthrough DTS Sound Check DTS-HD MA 7.1 into 5.1 ampi setup( no upmix , no audyssey DSX, no prologic ) ... your surprise :-)

When I play the TrueHD & DTS-MA sound check clips via Pi2, all 8 channels are mapped correctly. So, not sure what you mean by "virtual back surround"... I'm getting the discreet 8 channels as intended. I do lose height channels for ATMOS, but that's expected.

Re: grades and Pi2 in particular, panckage, not intending to "mislead" anyone, rather the opposite. Maybe just say "recommended" for Pi2 and Q5, and leave out the grades? Although I can see that being controversial as well Wink.

+1. VidOn was good for the first player to support full 3D & HD audio via Kodi. Besides the GPL issue, 23.976 was never properly supported (microstutters noticeable), slow box, silly membership for HD audio, AVR compatibility issues never addressed, and there's little to no activity anymore. End of life I'm afraid, and there are better options now. Also, who can forget Wolly joining the forum under 3-4 separate identities to (not so subtly) promote VidOn Smile.

Yep - the loss of metadata is the main downside of player decode rather than AVR decode. For many users this will be moot - but as you say, for some it is significant. However for many, player lossless decode will be very welcome, and few other devices achieve this (along with 3D MVC and Frame Packed 1080p output, decent 23.976, refresh rate switching, deinterlacing etc.) - let alone achieve it at the price point the PI 2 does.

If you can provide a sample file in m2ts format I can check if it plays on the Pi.

Thanks for the quick response. Have tried sticking it back into an mkv via mkv merge but it loses the MVC part. I've also tried putting it back into make MkV which does recognise the mvc stream...but that always crashes and fails to save! Don't think there's anything wrong with my make mkv programme as it handles discs fine.
So I guess I'll have to try the m2ts and see if it plays!!!!
