START HERE - Pick the Right Kodi Box (updated Dec 2020)

Sorry to hear that you got DOA box.
I bought two of them and they both run well.

Looks like Zotac has some Quality control issues.

Ya it's too bad, I found several others who also had similar issues and Zotac didn't provide particularly good customer service. I'm glad to hear your boxes are working well though. I hope my Rasberry Pi2 works out better.

Well I have bought and installed over 40 Raspberry Pi over the time and never had hardware issues with them.
Just make sure you have a decent SD-Card and a good power supply for Pi that gives enough power.

And if possible connect your pi with ethernet since I never had great experience with Wifi.

As for the ram I would put 2x 2gb ram or 2x 4gb
Because it improves 4K video decoding when you have ram in dual channels mode I believe.

Thanks again. Picked up a cheap 16GB SSD and will also follow your advice about the 2 sticks of RAM.

Well, I realized why someone returned this Zotac to Amazon. It is dead on arrival, won't boot up even after resetting the CMOS. As much as I wanted something more "substantial", I gave in and ordered a Rasberry Pi2 starter kit. It just seems so remarkable that such an inexpensive device will deliver the performance I'm looking for.
What sucks about those Amazon Warehouse deals is, they wont let you return the item once bought, most likely they will refund 50% of what you paid... I got stuck with an Asus Zenfone 2... Paid $199.00 got refunded 50% of payment. Sim card slot broken.. On delivery... Now i just use it as a tablet...

Even under warranty circumstances? I mean, if the product is defective , the warranty should cover it, not just that usual 10 day return policy-because-you-don't-like-the product-thingy (or whatever the return period you Americans have , here in Europe it's 10 days)

That has not been my experience. Since it arrived broken, they are paying return shipping and will give me a full refund. Amazon has always given me great customer service when needed.

That was not my experience with them they told me that since I bought it through Amazon warehouse deals that it was as is... but they did refund me 50% of what I paid for it.
I don't mind at least I got an Asus zenfone 2 for $99 the part it needs to be fixed I can order from China for $11
I still shop at Amazon but I don't shop for anything through warehouse deals.

I'm just looking to stream movies from my NAS and the internet as well as play some games via MAME. It sounds like a nVidia Shield is the right one for me?

I personally think you're doing a disservice to new Kodi users not to include more details about Amazon's Fire TV. Sure, you have to sideload Kodi and sideload a 'launcher' app FireTV Starter. But, many of the other hardware boxes that are included require a lot more technical knowledge (Chromebox?) and are all well worth it as a result. Sure, it won't auto-update like Google Play Store apps do - but it's a 1-button upgrade to any version including nightlies. Unlike my previous Openelec box, I can update to the latest builds as soon as they're released and not need to wait for another OS's release cycle.

I've had several Kodi boxes in the past and I can honestly say that the FTV (both the new and old versions) has given me the best overall experience. I'm running the skin I like the best (Aeon Nox) and not worrying about performance issues like I did with previous boxes. Media playback has also been perfect for me - digital audio output included. I don't have any 4k video to test with - but it did great with a full Blu-ray rip.

Anyway, am I saying it's the perfect Kodi box? No.. I'd prefer to always have Kodi front and center. But, for a sub-$100 box (I got mine for $75) I'm not sure there's any other box I'd rather have personally. When doing my research I also considered the Chromebox and Shield TV. But, both cost twice as much and I just didn't see the benefits over the FTV.

As for Amazon's "openly hostile attitude towards the Kodi project" - I don't know the full story. I do know at one time Amazon allowed Kodi to be in their appstore and then they removed it. But, it's not like Apple is going to let Kodi in their store anytime soon either (or without removing/restricting much of it) and there's mention of the latest AppleTV in this review.

An added bonus is being able to play Amazon Prime video, Netflix and most other games/apps that Android offers. But, I think it offers more than enough to be a stand-alone Kodi player as well.

id take cheap Chinese amlogic stuff over another fire tv any day. but thats just me i guess.

I guess maybe I just haven't run into that issue yet - at least I've never noticed any problems with any video's I've tried to play. Is there a test video or something to illustrate the problem? I'm just curious.. I did read a few posts like this one that seem to mention this issue.

I looked at several other Android boxes too.. my thought was any generic Android box would allow Kodi to stay running all the time, either by setting a custom launcher or an app that runs in the background (which I guess is technically what FireStarter does on the FTV). But, I kept reading about firmware issues or audio issues. Also, since these devices are less popular I wondered if any device-specific issues would get fixed. Plus, a lot of these devices just don't look great in a home theater cabinet. One has ports on every side.. another has a giant wireless antenna sticking out..

Anyway, I totally agree everyone has their own needs and preference.. I just wanted to add my $.02 that the FTV might be worth a look for someone trying to figure out which device to buy.
Hi,
I'm looking for cheap device. Only need for Live TV and torrent streaming. Any proposals.
Firstly be aware you need to buy a seperate USB TV Tuner as well, compatible with Broadcast TV in you particular part of the World. So the question is where do you live ?

This has to be plugged into a Kodi box and tuned. A lot of us use TvHeadend and OpenELEC Kodi for that.
The other option are the more expensive HD Homerun Tuner Options that can be connected to a Kodi box.

For Nice affordable Live TV with quality deinterlacing and minimal problems, I would recommend an AMLogic S8xx box. The AMLogic S812-H in the WeTek Core produces excellent video quality both for movies and Live TV.

Thank you for your response. Sorry, is it my fault, I mean IPTV like DNA TV addon or P2P sport addon, not Live TV. I have VU+ Zero for Satellite television but need other sports channels .

Those sound like plugins that allow access to unofficial content streams and they shouldn't be discussed here...
