Ringing Artifacts Explained

Image
Days of Heaven 1080p Blu-ray

Wikipedia: In signal processing, particularly digital image processing, ringing artifacts are artifacts that appear as spurious signals near sharp transitions in an image. Visually, they appear as bands or "ghosts" near edges. The term "ringing" is because the output signal oscillates at a fading rate around a sharp transition in the input, similar to a bell after being struck.

Ringing can be introduced in various ways:
  • Image upscaling or downscaling is used during the mastering process;
  • Edge enhancement is applied during the mastering process;
  • The signal is bandwidth-limited, discarding too much information for high frequencies;
  • The video renderer resizes with image upscaling or downscaling;
  • The video renderer applies edge enhancement as a post-process.

The common theory in image processing is to capture an image with the correct size and format for its intended purpose. If the image is too small, too large or too soft to be considered ideal for its end use, then unwanted manipulation of the image may occur in post-processing.

Pushing edge enhancement a little too far to compensate for a soft transfer or using sharp but simple upscalers such as Lanczos or Bicubic to upscale to HD resolutions almost always results in some visible halos being left behind. These sources are considered poor transfers and bad examples of video processing. This may not be bothersome to everyone, but ringing artifacts can make any video look noisy and distracting.

As for display modes, set 2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p50, 2160p59, 2160p60.

Thank you very much for your advice. So right now I am using:
chroma upscaling NGU - high
image downscalling Jinc (with scale in linear light and activate anti-ringing filter lelaxed)
image upscaling Jinc (with activate anti-ringing filter)
upscaling refinement - off
Artifact removal - Debanding: Medium/High
Artifact removal - Deringing: Off
Image enhancements: sharpen edges (1.0) + AR + AB 50%
Dithering: Error Diffusion 2

Should I change something?

Are you upscaling?

How do you mean it? I don´t see image doubling (because I use madVR 0.91.5) and I use setting that I wrote you. So right now this settings are everything, that I have changed from default:

properties: no change, because I am not sure. I use television which have 8 bit+FRC = 10bit (PC levels, 8 bit, auto)
calibration: this disply is already calibrated - BT.2020, pure power curve 2.00
display modes: 2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p50, 2160p59, 2160p60.
hdr: convert HDR to SDR by using pixel shader math (this display´s peak nits 320, preserve hue in high quality 50%-50%, all others tick)

chroma upscaling NGU - high
image downscalling Jinc (with scale in linear light and activate anti-ringing filter lelaxed)
image upscaling Jinc (with activate anti-ringing filter)
upscaling refinement - off
Artifact removal - Debanding: Medium/High

I'd switch image upscaling to NGU high or medium rather than use Jinc. And disable sharpen edges. NGU is plenty sharp enough.

Ok and what about other options in image upscaling.

I have got a weird problem when I change display modes to: 2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p50, 2160p59, 2160p60
Black bars started to be "grey" (white) and not black. Is there any way to solve it?

Did you check that your display supports those modes? Reread the section on display modes for instructions on how to do this.

My screen refresh rates are 23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 50, 59,60. I think this should not be a problem

Did you touch something in zoom control?

No only
disable scaling if image size changes by only 2 lines or less
move subtitles to bottom of the screen/window

Problem solve. I must set HDMI Black Level to low (or auto) in smsung television expert settings

Try the Mac support forums. This is definitely the wrong thread.

Thumbs Up
@Warner306

Just wanted to say "thank you very much" for this informational guide on how to set up madVR!!

I use the displaycal to build the 3dlut file,
Can be "convert HDR to SDR content by using an external 3DLUT" application,
Can not be "process HDR content by using an external 3DLUT" application,
Tip is "input and output format wrong", do not know where the problem?
how do it?
