Run memtest86+ on your RAM - the only "installer wouldn't boot" issues I've seen were down to bad RAM DIMMs.

Other than that, I'm not really sure - are you on the latest BIOS? We know that Gemini Lake CPUs will boot the installer so it's unlikely to be a kernel issue, and more likely a BIOS issue - the installer should boot in either "legacy" BIOS or UEFI modes.

Probably best to continue the discussion in the LE forum until it is resolved - I'll keep an eye on it and if any changes are necessary will follow up.

Regarding my NUC, its only the integrated receiver controlled also by Harmony Hub.
Compared to my external MCE receiver, controlling is much more faster.

What do you mean with "faster"? Quicker response to button presses, quicker button repeat?

I mean, if i rapidly press any buttons several times on my harmony remotes (i have one hub in my living room and one hub in my sleeping room), my NUC reacts without any delays, more straighter, compared to my HTPC with my RC6 IR-Receiver.
Both Hub's/Harmony's are having the same setup.

With new build #0418 everything works - many thanks!

I have set my command repeats on level "1", which gives me the best experience for my MCE-IR Receiver so far.

You can boot memtest86+ off a USB memory stick (in theory).

Booting Ubuntu might also be worth a try.

Yes, the fact an identical system has the same problem is interesting, particularly as someone else with a different Gemini Lake system managed to boot into LE 8.2.4 with 4.11.y kernel (though without graphics due to the older graphics driver, and was then able to update to a working system with one of these 4.14.y builds). The fact syslinux isn't starting smells like a BIOS bug or boot incompatibility of some kind, which might be specific to this particular system or BIOS.

One other thing to try is booting with a different gptmbr file in case the BIOS is configuring a non-standard boot drive. Try writing (using the LibreELEC USB-SD Creator) this image of my latest build to your USB memory stick - it's using gptmbr_f.bin as the MBR, see if you have any more luck when booting the installer.

1. Do you have a "Boot Menu" option when the NUC boots (it's F10 in my i5 Skylake NUC). Make sure you are booting with the UEFI : USB : Generic Flash Disk <blah blah> : OS Bootloader device (this is for UEFI booting) and not the USB : Generic Flash <blah blah> : Boot Drive device (legacy BIOS).

2. https://communities.intel.com/thread/123631 <--- this guy seems to lose video after the video mode is switched, are you able to connect the TV to the other video ports on the NUC in case it's outputting video on the wrong port? It may also have switched into a video mode your TV doesn't support.

My only other suggestion is to return it and request a refund. I really find it hard to recommend anything Intel these days.

 Thanks for the help Milhouse... I installed windows on it this afternoon and that worked fine after that i went ahead and tried one more time to install libreelec. And with the windows install on the ssd the stick was able to boot into installation and i could install it.
After libre elec was installed though i only got black screen again when booting up. I think it has something to do with the device it is trying to boot from or with video modes. 

Either way i have lost my nerves and am sending back the NUC. Just wanted to say thanks one more time. I guess early adoption is not a good thing to do with this type of product.

Are the intel hd audio patches still included? i just tried the 0417 version on my nuc6cayh and it only passes DD and DTS, even DD+ Eac3 was sketchy and only worked sporadically. and anything like TrueHD all i got was silence, and after trying to play those it killed the 2 channel pcm from the menu and i had no sound until i rebooted.

Did you also enable Settings > Player > Videos > Adjust display refresh rate and set it to Always?

If it is Off then you won't get any refresh rate switching, even with items in your Whitelist.

Eventually the "Adjust display refresh rate" setting will be removed completely once the Whitelist functionality is ready for prime time.

RPi hangs and doesn't return to the GUI at the end of playback, so maybe there's something wrong with Kodi and extremely short duration videos... NUC seems OK though. RPi has this in the log at the end of playback:
