Henys's reply is exactly what I found,
I will try to compare build in player and KODI with some 4k test footage, but from my point of view different compile should solve this issue.

There is another thread discussing the same thing (although also 3D) and seem it is really for Sony to add Kodi to the Application (Video) eligible list.

Did someone from Kodi Team send Sony an "official" query to add it? maybe this will push things a bit?
Someone (on the above link) tinkered a bit and simulated Kodi with one package name from the list and looks like it works...

Yes we all agree this is the way that Sony implemented its Android TV setup. Not perfect indeed, but this is what we've.
I bet Netflix, Amazon and others approached the same way, to ensure the app works in its full potential.
Anyways, I opened a ticket with Sony, lets see what comes back.
I invite others from this community to send as well so we can get some momentum

Your assumptions are just wrong. All GUIs on Sony Android TV are rendered at 1080p. That's what Android tells the screen resolution to be. The GUI then gets upscaled to 4K later on in hardware. Video is taking a different route than GUI. The video pipeline is fully 4K capable. Upscaled GUI and native 4K video finally get blended in hardware without video being downscaled to 1080p ever.
There are indeed 2 separate video presets for apps, one is called 'Apps', the other one is called 'Apps (Video)'. Kodi triggers the first one while stock video apps trigger the latter (Netflix, YouTube). Video is handled in pretty much the same way for both. It has nothing to do with 1080p vs. 2160p. Some claim that only 'Apps (Video)' triggers the 24p display mode which is just wrong. 24p content inside Kodi is played back at a perfect 5:5 on my 120Hz Sony ATV. It might enable 3D. That's pretty much the only difference between the two presets (apart from being able to auto-switch to the Cinema picture mode). 3D is pretty much dead anyway though.
