START HERE - Pick the Right Kodi Box (updated Dec 2020)
I've tried to slim down Post #1 of this thread by branching into two smaller, compact, but important posts, those are....

VERY important - Media Player Firmware Updates & Watchlist (click)

For those that do not want to get bogged down in the detail below...

Hi can't find a good answer to the following questions:

1. I have a D34010WYK can I with Libreelec somehow get auto resolution changing?
2. Can I somehow use Lanczos3 with Librelec on D34010WYK?
Is this still true? "The Amlogic has not released fbdev Mali"

Can someone give me a update on S912? Minix has a box with S912, does that mean it's now supported, the Mali drivers has been released? Please shed some light on this, because I can't get my head around it.

AIUI there are builds for the S912 (Krypton and Leia) but they rely on slightly hacky GPU drivers (I think hacked from Android).  The roadmap for Kodi 19 means that this solution won't work - so the S912 is not a guaranteed future proof platform. That's why Sam Nazarko has gone with the S905D, and not the S912, for the Vero 4K+ (as he wants to guarantee future compatibility)

HOWEVER there is also a team working on open source Mali drivers that MAY deliver a driver for the S912's GPU that IS compatible with the future roadmap for Kodi.  However this is not guaranteed and is still MAY not WILL.

This is my understanding - others please feel free to correct me.

Thank you for a quick response! I think I will keep my Odroid C2 until the S912 is matured enough and is future proofed as you say. The S905 platform is old, but still ok. Would be nice with something with more power in.

Which one would you recommend?

Exactly what type of 4K ?
4K HDR to a 4K HDR capable TV ?

Plug n Play or DIY with LibreELEC / CoreELEC ?
Thanks for the reply. 4K HDR support would be preferred... given I'm looking for a low price it it's probably LibreELEC, the price should be about 50-60$ max.. even lower if possible.

$60 Max.
You are likely looking at a Gigabit equipped - S912 Tanix TX9 as found over HERE

The problem is all the cheaper S905W, S905X devices have no Gigabit ethernet and usually much weaker WiFi.

If you need a better remote then grab the USB dongle Mini receiver, Wireless (NOT the Bluetooth) one from ......

Bought that remote & ended up tossing it. Kept losing BT connection w/Shield. YMMV.

That is too bad, it is a good remote.  I just purchased the Nvida Shield, so I tested my remote, the one with the 2.4Gh dongle, and it is perfect.  Even the "voice" button is almost as good as the original remote.  Now, I will have to wait and see which remote will be my goto for this Shield box.
Yep, I'd do the USB dongle version vs. BT if I were to try it again. When the BT one did keep its connection, the buttons/voice worked well.

I'm pretty sure the Vero 4K+ uses the S905X, not the S905D.

Vero 4K is S905X (which is 100Mbs Ethernet)
Vero 4K+ is S905D (which adds native GigE but is similar in most other ways to the S905X)
Makes sense.

Ok we know that Amlogic has not released fbdev Mali for the s912 so maybe buying a box with that cpu is not very safe for the future.
How about the new chipsets that have been released on September?
The s905X2 and the s905Y2.
Do we have the same problem? Or because they are variants of the s905 , we know all the info we need?
