The WeTek air product page is up and the device will be launching this month I've been told.

Well there is a hole in the market for a decent Google Certified (click) dual MUX Tuner - Android TV device, possibly with PVR features.
Especially now that Google have optimised Android Oreo for lower spec chipsets, and have implemented Project Treble for Oreo 8.1 and onwards.

I just hope the AMLogic Oreo deinterlacing is proper full motion and not the half motion garbage AMLogic Android users currently put up with.

It usually gets listed within days of certification. Videostrong as a vendor doesn't even appear on the list. That makes me wonder what exactly is going on.

Interestingly there is a "WeTek Air" certified Android TV (Operator Tier) device in that list.... with Dual Mux DVB-T2 or ATSC TV tuners and a Zigbee Radio (click) for likely Smart home control

Hey all. I'm running one of the last Kaszaq (sp?) builds on a Beelink MX III II S905x machine. It has served me well. I suspect corruption on the microSD card and I want to start from scratch with a new card. I was hoping someone might tell me the 'best' build to get (I know that's totally subjective). I'm not up with Libre vs Core and Leia vs Krypton. I did go back back through the thread. A couple of hours of research might find me my answer but I was hoping someone could save me that couple of hours. Thanks.

Extra Kodi settings are found in Kodi Settings > System > AMLogic...

Before a complete Nuke it option...just drop the .img.gz and newer .dtb file in the Update folder and Reboot and see how you go.

The new WeTeK air apparently doesn't support Netflix as it's not officially certified by Netflix (yet)...

And apparently there won't be any more updates for the Play2.

That's what they told someone on Facebook.

@Magendanz, a well respected Android ROM developer from over on the Android Freaktab Website posted this recently in a S905X2 - (Videostrong) MECOOL KM9 thread and it neatly sums up the late 2018 Netflix situation regarding cheap Google non-certified, Netflix non-approved, Android hardware...

Okay, I feel that I've got to chime in here to defend VideoStrong...

The KM9 hardware is the best TV box hardware for the price that's available on the market today. With the Amlogic S905X2 and the u211 reference hardware, you've got (100Mbit) Ethernet, (USB3), 5G (AC) WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, MicroSDXC, LPDDR4 RAM, 32GB eMMC, four decent Cortex-A53 CPU cores and a smooth Mali-G31MP2 GPU.
They've also followed our lead here in FreakTab and abandoned the clunky Chinese TV box launcher for a *real* Android TV "Leanback" Launcher. It's now pretty damn close to the curated Android TV experience that Google designed for the Nexus Player and nVidia Shield TV.

They even got Widevine L1 DRM keys from Google to allow many streaming media apps like YouTube TV to play, which is more than any other Chinese ODM has bothered to do. The glaring exception is Xiaomi, but they're running on much weaker hardware and they basically ceded the entire software UI design and device certification to Google.

VideoStrong did drop the ball in three areas:
- PlayReady DRM keys, which are required for Amazon Prime Video
- Google Cast device certification
- Netflix device certification
The real problem here is Netflix and their new aggressive white list policy. Device manufacturers are being asked to pony up millions just to obtain Netflix certification, so they can deliver content that Netflix's subscribers are already paying to access. This is what strikes me as wrong !

The enemy here isn't VideoStrong (Mecool), it's Netflix. As a subscriber, I already pay for that content, so they shouldn't be asking me to pay again when I buy an Android TV box.
This is the kind of greedy move that monopolies pull when they figure customers have no choice but pay more.
There are alternatives, though, and a smart move by VideoStrong would be to add PlayReady DRM so that Amazon Prime Video can offer Netflix some competition on their platform.

Luckily with Android Kodi Leia running on devices with Widevine L1 DRM, Kodi users now can use the Android Kodi Leia Netflix Addon (click) to stream 1080p with 5.1 DD+ / DD audio.

Unfortunately the new AMLogic S905X2/Y2 chipsets have no Linux ARM G-31 GPU drivers so they cannot dual boot and run LibreELEC or CoreELEC Kodi.
Also is appears the MECOOL - AMLogic Oreo 8.1 does not have IEC61937 Android Kodi HD audio support. We see the same issues on the new Oreo 8.1 with the Xiaomi Mi Box S.

There is NO Android Kodi auto refresh / resolution switching on these cheap AMLogic Android media players.

The previous S905X & S912 (Nougat) devices with Widevine L1 DRM still represent better Kodi value if you want to dual boot and need to have working HD audio with auto refresh & resolution switching for LibreELEC / CoreELEC Kodi Krypton onwards.
AND like always - you really need Gigabit Ethernet if you plan on home network streaming high bitrate 4K HDR Bluray Rips on any Kodi device.

Yes I agree if we crystal ball gaze into the future, but...

It's pretty true for the current implementations of LE / CE Kodi Krypton / Leia that use the old v3.14 Linux Kernel and that was basically what I was talking about, and end Kodi users would currently be interested in.

Give it up to a year and Linux ARM Kodi developers might get interested in S905X2/Y2 and by then a bunch of us would be looking at something based on the S922X reference AML boards (click)

An update in this budget thread because AMLogic devices will be hitting the market real soon with what will be updated AML S905X3's (click) in them. These will get much cheaper as virtually every seller starts releasing then in coming months.

The beauty of such devices is this time around they come equipped with Gigabit LAN (1000M) and USB3 out of the box.

The 1.9GHz S905X3 will likely be the mass market AML chipset for years to come, until the S905X4 hits which is rumoured to have next gen. AV1 (click) video hardware decoding.

The S905X3 uses ARM Cortex-A55 CPU's which are up to ~20% faster vs all the previous S905X's, that used ARM Cortex-A53's. Memory performance is also faster.

S905X2/X3 will give you auto switching everything + Kodi Leia 4K HDR + HD Audio support if you use the CoreELEC OS (click)
As usual BT and WiFi driver support will likely be hit and miss at first when using such a Linux based OS. Use Gigabit LAN instead.

Also recommended is a Wireless remote with it’s own USB RF receiver dongle, which completely avoids all Infra Red and Bluetooth remote hassles.
Usually Beelink devices have those, otherwise something like the MINIX A2 lite with it’s mini keyboard is a real beauty for Kodi usage.

Thanks @wrxtasy. I haven't closely followed recent/new AMLogic options since my Tanix TX92 w/CoreELEC (installed to internal, wiping out stock Android) still runs mostly flawlessly.

But, I'm intrigued by S922X-powered ODROID-N2 (or Beelink GT-King), mostly for CE use, but maybe dual-boot w/unofficial Android TV as well. Looking for better/faster performance overall. Not that TX92 is slow, but sometimes I wish it could be a tad faster (library scans, navigation).

Wondering whether S905X3/Y3/D3 would be closer to S912 performance or better? Or, go for  S922X, but worth it for mostly CE use?
