Anyone get Dolby Vision encoded video to play back properly through Kodi? I haven't figured it out.

I went away and did bitrate analysis on the sources I was using, and finally I have more or less explanation of what's going on. Previously I only had average bitrate info, but i now can see why it was struggling - some action scenes were actually jumping to over 100mbps, and a lot of time over 70mpbs and that was when it had issues. I tried finding out some more or less constant bitrate files, so that I can see what is the breaking point and came across jelly fish demo site. Those files are not really CBR, but they have progressively increasing bitrate. I went quite quite high (well above 100mbps) with some minor stuttering, but nothing like buffering issues I was experiencing before until... I tried the file with an audio. And then the problem immediately came back. I went down to as little as 55mpbs file and the issue was still there. If only stuttering was occurring occasionally without having to see buffer reload percentage then a lot of sources were more or less watchable. Not sure why the audio presence makes such a difference. I tried playing with different options of pass-through or decoding, but nothing really changed the buffering.

At least now I know that buffering does occur at a very high bitrate...

It's not supported yet but it is on the to-do list.

Here's my setup, and I'm getting low to mid-500Mbps wired.

Whoop whoop.

Wow - I thought the maximum hardware bandwidth of a USB 2.0 connection was 480Mbs, and most protocols over it dropped this significantly.  My understanding was that GigE over USB2.0 maximums were around 300Mbs, which is why my iPerf3 results of 270Mbs seemed in the right ballpark.

I wonder how your set-up is going above what should be possible?  How are you measuring your connection speeds?

Using fast.com to test.

That's not testing your local network - that's checking your internet speed isn't it?

Just tested with Jellyfish bitrate clips on my Synology NAS. Smooth playback of 250Mbps 4K H.264 clip (highest H.264 available on http://jell.yfish.us), and smooth playback of 300Mbps 4K HEVC clip. I did have minor stutter initially w/the highest available 400Mbps 4K HEVC clip, but subsequent times, it played fine.

Can you do an iPerf3 test?

Even my flawed set up was able to play up to 200mbps files, but as i said its the ones with audio that are really struggling. Can you please try the one that has audio (140mbps 4k 10 bit)?

Hmm...so why can't I reliably play a 60mb/s video (LG Chess) from on-board storage without stutter?

Ok, just received my Anker USB3.0 gigabit adapter that was mentioned earlier, tested using almost the same microusb right angle power adapter, only mine didnt have CY as the manufacturer (the CY was three times the price so figured I'd go with the unbranded one).

Fitted it (oh my wife does so love it when I drill through walls & the floors to run cables) & immediately tried the LG chess demo which had previously buffered constantly & was unplayable on 5ghz wifi just 6 foot from the router.

It plays perfectly.

Then did some reading about iperf, & after sideloading magiciperf, then realising I needed iperf2, not iperf3 to work with magic iperf, & connecting my windows 10 laptop to my router directly using a cat5e cable, did a test.

[  3]  0.0- 1.0 sec  40.9 MBytes   343 Mbits/sec
[  3]  1.0- 2.0 sec  41.0 MBytes   344 Mbits/sec
[  3]  2.0- 3.0 sec  40.6 MBytes   341 Mbits/sec
[  3]  3.0- 4.0 sec  40.6 MBytes   341 Mbits/sec
[  3]  4.0- 5.0 sec  40.8 MBytes   342 Mbits/sec
[  3]  5.0- 6.0 sec  40.4 MBytes   339 Mbits/sec
[  3]  6.0- 7.0 sec  40.9 MBytes   343 Mbits/sec
[  3]  7.0- 8.0 sec  40.6 MBytes   341 Mbits/sec
[  3]  8.0- 9.0 sec  40.6 MBytes   341 Mbits/sec
[  3]  9.0-10.0 sec  40.6 MBytes   341 Mbits/sec
[  3]  0.0-10.0 sec   408 MBytes   341 Mbits/sec

Brilliant, better than I'd hoped for as I thought 300Mbits/sec would be the maximum due to the USB2 throughput.

In theory, I should have no problems playing anything at all now. Just watching an Avengers Infinity War remux which is 33GB & half an hour in I've had zero buffering.

Now all I need to do is update every instance of Kodi on my network to 18, as I run a mysql so need to do them all so it doesn't mess the databases up, & can use this as my daily Kodi machine instead of my HTPC. TBH I'll prob just wait for the stable 18 to come out as can't see it being that long.

Happy days!

Thanks for validating the kind of results I’m getting. No idea what iperf was, until now, and how to install on Synology.

It's the low-to-mid 500Mbs that I'm struggling to understand - as USB 2.0 has a max throughput of 480Mbs at the USB level, ignoring any overheads.
