v18 4k really washed out, 1080p fine
#1
I've recently upgraded some of my kit (TV - LG OLED, Amp -  denon avr-x6500h and graphics card - GeForce GTX 1660 Ti) so I can get some 4k goodness :-)

When I watch 4k stuff on Kodi 18.1 it looks really washed out. 1080p stuff is fine. 4k stuff looks great when I play it with VLC though, so I'm guessing I've got some settings wrong in Kodi?

Also, unlike when I had my old amp, I have to turn off passthrough even though I'm using WASAPI,  so I'm missing out on all the high def audio too :-(

Any ideas what could be wrong please?

Thanks,
W.

Kind of hard to offer any ideas without seeing a debug log.

Pretty shure he uses PixelShader already. Cause DVXA seems way to dark and PixelShader is giving the washed out (overbrightened and too less color saturation) effect at least on AMD Hardware.
What´s killing this in not 4k stuff in gerenal, but HDR Content converting to SDR with wrong Color mapping. Have the same problem too...

Might be time for a clean minimal portable install with just a good local video and not much more. https://kodi.wiki/view/Windows_FAQ#Portable lets see if Kodi will operate properly without all the cruft. Waspi has to be set twice in the settings>system>audio passthrough with 2.0 channels. The log from that will be more interesting, in the meantime https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid...pid2221253

Thank you very much for the reply. I've made a portable install of 18.1 and then 18.2 RC1 and the issue remains - very washed out image. I think I might be getting surround audio  - I didn't have to turn off passthrough (I know it's in 2 places in the audio settings) - but I need to check more files to be sure I think.

Here are the logs if you're still feeling genrous enough to have a look at them :-)

That log didn't have debugging turned on in settings, Log level changed to "LOG_LEVEL_NORMAL" doesn't show much. From what I've seen Wasapi device #3 is the ticket and Creating audio stream (codec id: 86019, channels: 6, sample rate: 48000, pass-through) appears you have proper pass-through. Set your rendering to auto and check out the 'in the meantime thread' with the wiki links to limited color range. BTW: how are stand alone players (like VLC and MCP-HC ) for colour?

Thanks for the reply. I had tried VLC and it looks very good. I've just tried MPC-MC and while it's a lot better than Kodi t's not as good as VLC.

Hopefully I've attached a detailed log this time:

The log shows no abnormality, did you try to set your graphic software to while using Full on the TV and Kodi 2.2 Summary of Results https://kodi.wiki/view/Video_levels_and_color_space Out of the eight combinations, only three have correct video levels by the time they reach the TV.

Thank again PatK. TBH most of that is over my head but I'll have a good look through that this weekend.

Use the new Kodi 19 (M*** generation), have a re-work rendering and decoding video on windows code was merged.

Improvements by Afedchin

added experimental HDR10 support for d3d11 processor
re-written WinRenderer and WinRenderBuffer because they were overloaded with code.
re-written DXVA decoding, now decoder uses its own d3d11 device and share surfaces (if possible)
added support HDR->SDR conversion for dxva processor (if a driver support it)
some cosmetics changes.

Kodi 19 is currently alpha and there is likely to be a lot of activity in the coming weeks/months. There will be some breakage. For now, it's the same Kodi Leia with a few more fixes and improvements, all fine for use.

Do you think they'll add these fixes for HDR to 18.2?
