UK crackdown and arrest over illegal add-ons :)

Reported in a few places - https://www.express.co.uk/life-style/sci...-streaming

Quote:"Today, officers from the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit, working with FACT arrested a 40 year old man in Winsford in connection with creating and maintaining a Kodi ‘add-on’ directly linked to the supply of illegal online streams."

Looks like some very popular (pirate) add-ons and associated repository's (repo) went down without warning or explanation.

@PatK Yes correlation isn't causation and all that - but it would be a bit of coincidence if it was entirely unrelated.  FWIW the police even released a statement too - https://www.nwrocu.police.uk/news/2019/6...g-offences - so it definitely looks legit.

Thought it was particularly interesting as I have never seen a developer being arrested/charged - only sellers of "fully loaded" boxes, etc.

I don't think any other people have been dumb enough to do it in a country like the UK without completely hiding themselves.

There was o e in the past that did an addon that had everything (can't remember it's name right now maybe ares) had live sports sports an everything. I remember he was dumb enough to do it all under his own name and got caught and arrested.

To be fair though, I dont think it's affected much. All addons had forks anyway so unless they co-ordinate a multi country strike on everyone including countries like Russia and China (who just don't care about americas copyright laws) I don't see how they could ever stop it.

It's all a bit ridiculous anyway. "kodi against piracy" the only things you can watch on kodi other than YouTube is videos you have downloaded online and watch off of a server/shitty old computer with sickbeard and sabnzb on it. So it's all pirated anyway even if not coming from a pirate site directly. (piracy) it's not like netflix has an addon unless they have now but I doubt it.

All the PVR addons were set for card sharing devices (piracy), or if even a legitimate account. They multiroomed a single subscription (believe it or not that's piracy too)

And unless you link your Spotify to it all your music was obtained illegally (no-one has kodi simply for Spotify, they have their own app so why would you)

And I'm pretty sure your major sources of donations are from the android tv box manufacturers so kodi definitely is profiting directly from piracy.

I mean don't get me wrong. We've all downloaded a few years worth of video from torrent sites in the past and maybe 1 or 2 million songs so I'm not judging, just saying.

Oh wait, you can watch a lot of porn legitimately. Wohoo. But not really family friendly that is it.

"What went wrong..." For starters, you having a skewed view on reality. Perhaps the UK experiences has gotten you a pair of big blinders that resulted in a narrow-view experience. And yes, of course there are more ways to play media on a Kodi device!

What a total load of BS.

You really are so wrong. Either you are intentionally pissing us off, or your brain must have sustained some serious damage in the last couple of years.

Again... Your view on Kodi users as a whole may reflect the few friends you have, but unless you have some actual proof regarding your allegations, I strongly suggest you choose the words in your next posts on this forum very wisely.

No! False! Completely Wrong! We're not! What a general accusation! Yes, you probably.  Confused
In my country i am born and living, it is civil fundamental right to make and own a private copy of every media acquired (for hard earned money), even if it is under copyright.
Law written here in on black letters with kinda yellow background and i even framed it and hung it on a wall in my home:

And since Kodi+Addons offers much more metadata and artwork eye candy stuff than a BluRay Case can do, why should i not scrape the mkvmerges into kodi.
Nothing ridiculous or pirated there...  and everyone i know who use Kodi, Plex, Emby or whatever use it in the same way.

People who use torrents are idiots anyway, it's a pure virus machine and the torrent lines go straight through NSA's main office (read the wikileaks)
In addition, very often the movie making-of's and director commentaries are much more interesting than the movie itself. And this stuff you get nowhere on the web, not even on torrents or whatever.

Oh man, don't know where you living but think your a bit on the wood path.

WOW!! What an impressive collection. Neat and tidy, with plenty of room to add to the collection.

How many Petabytes of computer storage do you have? Wink

Puts my DVD and Bluray collection to shame. Sad

You have read that so wrong.

I live in the UK, you live in Germany, both EU countries (for now anyway)

Here's the law for both of us:
DRM removal is not illegal in the UK; there is no law which prohibits it. But it is outlawed by the EU Copyright Directive. Assuming that eBooks would be considered software, it is illegal to provide a means of circumventing DRM, or to provide information to assist in that.

If you rip DRM material to your PC you have broken the law. Simple.

You are quoting something that allows researchers and universities/colleges to photocopy pages of books for work and educational purposes.

The minute you crack DRM material you have broken the law.

Kodi is legal like a crack pipe is legal. It's legal to have, legal to own but when you use it for its intended purposes its illegal. Hate to burst your bubble.

Just because you haven't shared what you ripped from a protected copyrighted DVD does not mean you have not broken the law. Your liscence for that material covers your dvd only. You can't play the dvd in public, hell even lending it to your friend to watch at their house is technically illegal. (it really is, you bought the dvd so you are liscensed to watch it in your home only. Your friend really needs to buy their own copy to be liscence to watch it at theirs. Not like that would ever be enforceable)

I havent downloaded a torrent since Xbmc 11, no need is there. So you can go full on idiot over that but hey, I used to use Kazaa so I am probably a lot older than you. Clearly a bit wiser too as I'm not dumb enough to think breaking protected material is legal. Even for my own use.

Some DVDs give you an MP4 copy to put on a single device. This does not liscence you to put it on a server and watch across multiple divices. Even if they are all yours

"Oh man, don't know where you living but think your a bit on the wood path."

I am in th UK. You are in Germany and clearly smoking crack. You must be to have read that and thought it OK to rip your DVDs to your computer

LOL, I have three, 3tb harddrives and one 250GB solid state drive in an old dell work station (bought it for £60, wohoo)

It has SABnzb, sickbeard and couch potato on. It turns on through bios at 12am opens the programmes. Searches for new content and shuts it's self off when it's done.

Last I looked it had about 400 films on it but a lot of them are kids films. It's the box sets that make up most of the hours.

I've deleted most of the music because it was old and I'd downloaded all the discographies from each artist. At one point at the bottom of the file list it said I had 1yr and 3months of audio. So basically if I pressed play it wouldn't have repeated a song until October next year. Far more than anyone can listen too.

I have Spotify now.

Problem is the hard drives don't always last forever. I lost about 600 films when one crashed and over heated. I was well gutted. I'd pretty much downloaded everything on yify torrent site before it got blocked around 5 years ago. Proper cried over that.

Ripping DVDs ends up giving you a file size of (sometimes) upto 10gb per film. It depends on how many audio options it had. A large film with 7.1 audio ripped in MKV was huge. Just not worth it,and downloading on a 60mb connection is incomparably quicker than ripping your DVDs.

But if you have DVDs why are you bothering with kodi at all. It's not like you have a 100 disc dvd changer is it. You still have to go to your computer to change the disc over so why would you. The blue Ray player is just the same if your not using addons or digital video files on a pc

Sorry, one last thing. Did you ram raid your local block buster before it went bust.

I also think you have more shelves than you require. Look, if you actually filled the shelves you could have saved so much space.

Or is that the local blockbuster. Did you pop in take a photo and post it on line so you climb up on your high horse and miss read a Web page. "I've framed it, it's on my wall" shame it doesn't actually help your situation.

Kodi is a lot like my penis, it has a ten foot user interface and is illegal to usefor 90% of the time.

@whatwentwrong81

You have moved away from attempting to make a point into territory that is forceful and somewhat insulting.

You have had the opportunity to air your opinion, now lets move on or I will simply your posts and send them to the bin.

We're all upset with that rubbish. Are MP's are an absolute joke. I actually emailed boris johnson and said we need to leave but keep everything the same. 😂

I said only when the world trade organisation rule on each point should we then change over to the new way but if we don't just F'ing leave we just look like a joke.

Still, I know what your doing is more legal than myself but in fairness I have sky, sky movies, sky sports and netflix, so technically I also have paid for practically all I have (or at least that would be my argument if anyone tried to arrest me for it).

3 o'clock kick offs aside, but then they are not liscence to play by any uk broadcaster so watching them online through American channels is the only way.
