How to know which codec is used
#1
For years I've had 0 playback issues with Kodi... everything seemed to just work.

I'm on CoreElec using Kodi and most stuff works great, but the past month or so have come across a few that play fine for maybe a minute then the image starts to look like a slide show of still shots instead of video.

How do I see which codec these are using? Trying to see if all the same, and if so maybe get the codec added to Kodi/CoreElec.

Press the letter 'o' on a (usb) keyboard during video play.
Simlpy 'adding a codec' is not possible in CoreELEC.
Specific video problems are best handled on the CoreELEC forums.

Well, I wouldn't be adding a codec to CoreElec would I? since that's more the OS... it would be Kodi that needs the codec, correct?

And by adding it to Kodi... I mean, find out if all using the same codec and if they are, submitting that to the Kodi team for possibly adding in a future release.

You could also provide Kodi's debug log (wiki). If there is some unknown component or mishap, it should pop up.

Ok but what is the result of your investigation? The other option is to use mediainfo.

"O" didn't really bring up much at all, no codec info. Some reason this site is hit/miss when it sends me notifications that someone replied to the thread. Didn't know there were more posted.

MediaInfo... am I looking at writing library?

Depending on the skin in use, but some skins do provide that info as well, if the movies are in the library. As I guess you are after the video codec

o during playback gives me:

H264:

HEVC:

So I'm not sure what you are missing.

For more detailed info you have to use mediainfo <moviefile> on the OS side of things. Means, as you are using CoreELEC you either have to let the OS do the system mounts from the shares you are using and then you are able to run that command on that path. So it should look like mediainfo </path/to/mountpoint/<moviesourcefolder>/<movienamefolder/<moviefile>. Or, if your NAS is capable of running that command, you can also log in via SSH to your nas and do the same.

Or you simply enable debug logging and check the log as all info is there after searching in that log for videoplayer::open. Scroll down a bit more and search for the ffmpeg infos.

Would the log show that a video stutters? or just a log to show what codec is being used.?

If there's any video stutter, then the log should show it if debugging is enabled.

Hey... didn't forgot... still have the issue. Had a few files this past weekend that after 16 minutes would look like a slide show.

Checked CoreElec and they had a new version out. Mine auto installs updates, but I guess doesn't update to new versions, so finally had the time last night to wipe out my SD card and install the latest build.

I haven't tested any files yet. Apparently there was some re-writing of code at TMDB and now my scraping is having issues. I like to rename my files to have "the" at the end, ie. The 6th Day, I rename to 6th Day, The. For years I never had any issue with this but recent changes at TMDB don't like the naming. Seems to be a few with this issue. Most scraped fine, but have to manually scrape about 50 files tonight, and when manually searching it doens't bring up the correct name, I have to retype it out each time. Probably plugging the keyboard in for that. Smile

Anyways... wanted to have a fresh/clean install of the latest version to see if fixes the issue before posting a log file.
