using localfiles but adding to the database and being able to create smart playlists.

Hi guys, have not used kodi for many years and could do with a bit of advice if thats okay.

Setup - iMac with local harddrive - Video files all stored locally.

I have a fresh install of Kodi with no plugins and have added a new source of video files, i have the content set to movies and the scraper set to local information only. On the home screen now under movies, it says that my library is empty although when i dive down through the files section i can see all my videos displayed perfectly.

The problem i have is i want to create some smart playlists based on a word contained inside each filename, i have tried to create some smart lists but they come up blank. I am assuming this is because although kodi can see and play my files it hasn't added to the DB?

Apologies if this is an obvious answer but i have tried searching forums to no avail.

If your library is empty, then Smart Playlists will not work. Most functions in Kodi require a correctly populated library.

Thanks Guys, no i dont have any nfo files. i run a firework company and these are just videos i use at a wedding fair to show customers, i label each show with the package name so i wanted to create lists of each package so if a customer asks for a particular package i could show them. Currently i have them listed in folders against different venues.

As these are your own personal videos, there is no information you can scraper online. This is where NFO files come to the rescue. They do exactly the same job as online scraping, but you create the data locally.

Have a quick read of the general nfo page... https://kodi.wiki/view/NFO_files

Then use the Movie NFO templates on this page... https://kodi.wiki/view/NFO_files/Movies
