I finally got around to keeping local copies of the "Die Hard" movies and they list, for example as "Hard, Die". I'm guessing this is beause "Die" is "The" in German and that is the correct treatment.

Can I manually overide this? I tried using "Sort Title" but that didn't work.

You have to remove it under Settings => Movies/TV Shows => General => Sort Tokens. Sort title is to add another title to sort it in Kodi while the title is the same.
