Android Black screen with sounds after resume playing on Sony AndroidTV
#1
I had this problem on kodi 18.6 and after updating to kodi 18.7, i thought it would be solved.

So whenever I would stop an x265 video and decide to resume at last point, it would just be black screen and sounds. So to continue watching to specific point of a movie, i would start from beginning and skip to the point i stopped.

What could be the problem and what could I do to fix this?

Kodi 18.7

there are several threads on the subject running a while back. Not sure there is a solution on v18. Didn't try v19 for a while.

@fritsch I've narrowed down the case where resume shows only sound and no video.
It happens only on x265 10bit while all the rest is OK (x264, x265 non 10 bit).
Using Kodi 18.7 latest test of yours (which solved the frame skipping issue) on Sony XE95. Btw, w/o H/W encoding it works, although awful performance obviously
here is my log oqiyufinij (paste)

I tried testing on the latest matrix, however there is a different issue on the latest as I cannot even skip while running a video (most likely a different issue), so I gave up
Its been there for some time now for v18 on Sony, and I saw reported on Phillips in other threads

I don't know if this helps to further understand the problem... I wish I had some dev skills to help you guys...

Exactly the same issue with Kodi 18.6 and didn't change with Kodi 18.7, on a Sony AG9. No issue with same videos using VLC.

Still black screen with only audio after resuming playback with latest version. So I have to sideload 17.6 again to my Philips TV...

When searching "Black screen" in this Andoriod forum I get other posts about this.

Why did this problem never get solved? It is lucky that 17.6 still plays every file I throw at it!

It probably never got solved because Kodi devs got tired of working around broken firmware.

Try Kodi 19 or try updating your firmware, it's likely related to Philips firmware, similar to the issues noted in this thread https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid...pid2960478

Hi and thx for the respons but it is not the same problem.

The quality of the picture is excellent. But if you stop the clip and then resume from where you stopped you will only get the sound of the clip with a black screen.

When reading the other posts it seems to be a Android TV problem in general after Kodi 18, not only Philips.

As stated the problem started with 18 so I am still using 17.6 which is really fine by Me if it didn´t force me to have the app updates setting on manual in Google Play.

Same problem here with Kodi 18.8 on a Sony Android TV (Android 7, Model KD-65XD7505, Firmware PKG6.2858.0082EUA). I can confirm that resuming works fine with h264, but for me it results in sound-only-playback for h265 regardless of 8 or 10bit encoding. I have found no workaround except for stopping and then "play from beginning" via Kodi. Bookmarking can help to jump back to the resume position. Skipping back to the beginning without returning to Kodi menus first does not help either.

Neither Emby nor Jellyfin (builtin ExoPlayer) apps show any problems when resuming the same video files. Unfortunately neither of them come close to the feature set that Kodi offers for playback, especially when it comes to subtitle positioning and audio downmix with center amplification.

I'm having the same issues on a Sony TV (XBR-49X700D) with HEVC video (seems to affect both 8 and 10 bit).  Play from beginning and seek work fine, but stopping and then resuming from that position results in no video (black screen), but audio works fine.  As an additional symptom, when trying to resume the whole screen flickers before going black.  If I seek forward or backward after resuming, I see a blue circle with 100 in the middle (I assume this is the buffer), but the actual video is still black.

I am on the latest TV firmware (v6.6575).

Any Sony TV not affected? What does your vendor say?
First decide what functions / features you expect from a system. Then decide for the hardware. Don't waste your money on crap.

i tried the matrix alpha 2 on my sony.  the bug is fixed and resume worked on x265 content.  then 18.9 was released, and i needed to go back to v18 to have an addon work.  18.9 resume doesn't work still for me.

also not all h.265 encoded content exhibits this.  professional encoders (ateme) uhd blu-ray rips resume just fine.  only seen the problem with x265 encoded content
