With the latest nightly builds the proxy setting of XBMC do not seem to be used in python scripts. I guess it has to do with the external python being used.

Is there a work around for this? Or perhaps a permanent fix?

Please post a bug report on trac along with full details of what it takes to reproduce.

It would pay to cc jcarroll.
