Asrock ION 3D 152D and latest XBMCFreak build - NO WiRELESS possible
#1
Howdy campers!

Topic says most. I have tried to install with and without internet connection via cable; the possibility to setup wireless just is not there. I assume in XBMC it is under SYSTEM -> SETTINGS -> NETWORK. Only three options there, and none of them deals with Wireless setup.

So, does anyone have any cool (working) ideas on what I should do? I have read on the xbmcfreak forums and nothing there helped me. Please keep in mind I am fairly noobish at Linux, so if you actually can and feel like helping me; treat me like a child Smile

XBMCFreak version: XBMCFreak 10.1 Maverick livecd v2

Thanks in advance!
Klaus

Hi again,

Is this questions something _nobody_ knows? Is there a different livecd install that actually makes wireless work with Asrock ION 3D 152D? It would be nice if some kind soul gave me a hint Smile

Thanks,
Klaus

Is the wireless adapter even supported under Linux? Google is your friend.
You could also try a Ubuntu maverick live CD to see if the adapter shows up in that, to see if its a xbmc-live or Linux issue.

Thanks for reply. I would assume it is supported? I am using this:
XBMCFreak version: XBMCFreak 10.1 Maverick livecd v2

Why would they make a live CD that did not support the built in wireless? And I have googled this for hours without finding something. So I am about to give up and just find a different media center solution.

Ok, maybe you should do that if you think other media center provide better wireless support. (I think it would be better to try another OS that the HW supplier have better support for/from). Or you could follow the advice to test it in a standard Ubuntu desktop live CD.

Is that really true? Did you try enter this in the google?

(seems like it is NOT automaticilly supported by by Lucid nor Maverick).

Yes I did google, and I did find the top post there; and I did the following steps (which did not solve the problem).

My steps:
Code:

wget http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37387612/r...sfw.bin.gz
gunzip rtl8192sfw.bin.gz
sudo mkdir /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU
sudo mv rtl8192sfw.bin /lib/firmware/RTL8192SU/

Then reboot, or:
Code:

sudo rmmod r8192s_usb
sudo modprobe r8192s_usb

The hardware could be new or not well supported under linux (which is the hardware manufactures fault) in which case a more upto date version of linux or adding the drivers yourself could help.

Id start by finding out which wireless chipset that motherboard contains and work from there. Once you have the exact model number finding more info will be easier.

XBMCFreak has a version of his live cd based on natty, you could give that a shot too, as its a more current version of linux than the one youre using.

It's not enough just to have the module installed for your wireless adapter; you need to configure the system to use it. This can be done via the command line (exit XBMC or press <CTRL><ALT><F1>) using the instructions here: http://mellowd.co.uk/ccie/?p=485.

Or you could try the Wireless Manager XBMC addon: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=90410

In either case, you need internet access, so you need to use an Ethernet connection to your router.
