Basically, the problem is in playing back HD content. I am pretty sure at some point, 1080p played fine on this laptop. For some time, however, it has not.
Most of my media, in fact almost 100%, is on a server share done using SMB. Almost all is in Matroska x264. I play this content on a Xtreamer Sidewinder and it all plays perfectly. On my mac, there is continual bits where the video is behind the audio (it will eventually "catchup", meaning the video will play really fast until they are back in sync), or worse, both skip every second and it becomes completely unwatchable.
I guess what I am trying to get at: Is this laptop just too old/weak to play 1080p content, or is there something else? I don't think its a bandwitdh issue, as I am connected of switched 1000baseT, and as I said, the Xtreamer plays all of this without even the slightest hiccup.
I have everything in XBMC set to its original defaults. I did notice some options for HW Acceleration, which I haven't played with, as its set for "Auto Detect".
