Question AC3/DolbyDigital
#1
I downloaded 2 movies with AC3 audio codec. When i want to select the movie in XBMC, it displays the codec info for video and audio, year of release, scaling ratio...

both movies are AC3. But on one movie xbmc displays the logo of Dolby Digital and on the other one the logo of AC3 and not Dolby Digital... And i guess DD and AC3 means the same thing ?

I checked the media info with a utility, and for booth its AC3 with similar bitrate. The only difference was the number of channels. The movie with the DD logo had 6 channels while the movie with AC3 logo had 5 channels.

I am a little bit confused Oo

Thank you

The Dolby Digital standard is a subset of the AC3 codec. The file that displayed AC3 is probably not DD compliant. It is still surround sound though and will probably play fine on most DD receivers, it's just not GUARANTEED to work unless its within the DD specification.
