XBMCLive dist-upgrade necessary?
#1
I'm a happy XBMClive user, but the other day a question crossed my mind.

XBMCLive is based on Ubuntu, which has a twice-a-year release cicle, but it seems that XBMCLive does not follows that pattern. At least, my XBMCLive reports to be an Ubuntu 10.04:

"xbmc@sion:~$ cat /etc/issue
Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS \n \l"

My question: Is it necessary to run a dist-upgrade from time to time in order to be up to date?

Thanks!

It's been my experience that dist-upgrade usually breaks something, the last few releases of Ubuntu have changed some of it's under-the-hood stuff, audio, power management etc, I've ended up doing a clean install xbmc live when a new version lands, though I'm sure as xbmc live becomes more mature these issues will stop, certainly the new unified audio engine will stop a lot of out the box headaches for me Smile

also...the latest uptodate stable xbmc is 10.1. 10.1 is based on ubuntu 10.04.

It is very likely that a dist-upgrade will not work. When the next xbmc is realsed I would either only upgrade xbmc (sudo apt-get install xbmc) or install the new live from scratch. Of course you could try a upgrade before scratch...just make a backup.
