okay, my HTPC (emachine ER1401) has played everything perfectly on windows apart from an odd few old anime episodes. i don't know the exact codec but its an mkv file and the odd episode has a purple tinge to it and its very blocky.

the same file on my mac plays perfectly fine.

do i need to install any codecs which my windows version of XBMC will make use of?

XBMC includes all the codecs it needs for any platform it is installed on. Try running MediaInfo on the file and tell us what it says.
