Sometimes I pause my video because I want to take a closer look. This is not possible with the way xbmc behaves by default. Is there any sort of option to not have anything pop up on the screen to interfere with the view of the picture when pause is pushed?

This is all controlled by the skins. So they'll detect that the video is paused and show the "paused info" stuff. Only thing i can think of is editing the skin files to disable it.

Well if you ask in the skin forum the skinner can give you some pointers what file and line to edit.
