Remote control for Acer Revo3700
#1
Hi.

I've got a Revo 3700 running OpenElec and XBMC.

I would like to buy a remote control but i've read lots of threads and am now very confused.

What is a good one to buy. Don't want to spend too much. Don't want loads of fancy features. Just to control it from a distance!

I'd like a neat solution - do they all have to have them big usb receivers on the end of a wire or is there a more neat solution?

Thanks. Mark.

See http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Control_Reviews for various remotes known to work with XBMC. Generally speaking the eHome remotes are the best, but these need configuring with LIRC to work. I don't know if OpenElec has LIRC preconfigured, or if not how hard it is to do.

Look at the remote in my signature, for 30$ CAD and it works out of the box (I use almost the same setup as yours)
Hardware: Revo 3610 + SSD - Harmony 700 Remote

Your remote is a rebadged ORtek VRC-1100 (http://wiki.xbmc.org/?title=Remote_Contr...s#VRC-1100). The Wiki review article refers to several guides to setting this up with Ubuntu and it all looks a bit involved. If the VRC-1100 works out of the box with OpenElec maybe a note to this effect should be added to the Wiki review.

Well it can be added, I only had to modify my keymap.xml (or keyboard.xml) to get some buttons to do what I wanted (ie: switch audio track and switch subs) but the main functions all worked instantly (as with xbmc on windows)

If an Acer 3700 (OpenELEC) is switched off will one of the XBMC iPhone remote apps be able to switch it on?

If, by 'Off' you mean actually off or hibernated (no power light) then no, the R3700 doesn't support any form of Wake on Lan (WOL) to switch it on.

Oh, that's a shame. Do a lot of people just leave their Revos running then?

What other alternatives are there?
