XBMC Nightlies Crashing on 1080p Playback
#1
Hi everyone:

XMBC is consistently crashing for me on 1080p playback, although it isn't an issue that's happening 100% of the time. I was using a nightly from early September that worked without issue and when I recently upgraded to the October 16 build, and each build thereafter until the most recent - xbmc-20111023-0e8168e-master-atv2.deb - 95% of the time I crash to frontrow before playback even begins. I'm running the build above on an ATV2, over an smb share with a centralized mysql and movie poster/fan art database on my server.

I have no issue with SD playback. My CrashReporter folder is empty (I don't know why) so here are my syslog and xbmc log:

Syslog - http://pastebin.com/gL9xPgvW
XBMC Log - http://pastebin.com/DwZnHAed

All of my movie files are MKV files with h264 audio. In this particular test, 2 files crashed (Outlaw Josey Wales and The Terminator.) One file (300) did not crash, although when I tested 300 on the previous 3 nightlies, it *did* crash, so there's no rhyme or reason to when this happens.

Many thanks to all for all of your efforts - XBMC is the reason I purchased ATV2 in the first place. Please let me know if I can provide any additional info.

Best,

SM

This indicates that you got out of RAM. Keep in mind that every app you install on ATV2 needs RAM even if you didn't start the app. Most RAM killers are Firecore MediaPlayer/Browser and so on and the Exposed VNC-Server (which is installed by NitoTV per default). Also a full blown custom skin could eat up your RAM.

Also double check if you have turned off "Settings > Video > File > 'extract thumbnails and video information'"

Thanks Memphiz, will check this out -- I have absolutely 0 other programs running on ATV except for XBMC, so this is very surprising. I'm also merely running the default confluence skin. I do not have NitoTV installed either, I installed XBMC via SSH, etc, to make everything as clean as possible.

I haven't done an updated restore and new jailbreak in a while (and I noticed recently that "TV Shows" has completely disappeared from FrontRow).... maybe it's time, although I'm hesitant to upgrade to iOS5.

While you are rolling back, you should roll back the atv2 to 4.3
Why is everyone updating their atv2s? Is there any advantage in doing so?

G-off, when running the Seas0npass jailbreak, will that automatically download the latest 4.3 build for me, or do I need to locate the ISPW separately? Been a while since I did a jailbreak, and I can't remember if Seas0npass will automatically download only the latest firmware for me.

What is VNC server for?

Your AppleTV tried to update to a newer firmware. The update dialog crashed XBMC.

What? no. Don't re-install iOS. Not only is it not necessary, but that will update your ATV2 and mean you have to use a tethered jailbreak. Just do what the FAQ says and you'll be fine.

Memphiz:

I ran a completely new jailbreak/restore of ATV2 to AppleTV2,1_4.3_8F455. I then ran through the installation instructions in the FAQ and installed the latest nightly - xbmc-20111024-c5758bf-master-atv2.deb. I also installed the update killer via ssh - apt-get install com.nito.updatebegone. I did not install any other software beyond XBMC. I re-uploaded my advancedsettings file to continue using the centralized MySql DB and thumbs db. I also turned off the "extract thumbnails" setting you mentioned previously in this thread.

I'm pleased to report that my files are no longer crashing to FrontRow immediately upon playing; however, they are crashing maybe 1-3 minutes in.

I tried 2 files - The Terminator and Tombstone:

Terminator (MediaInfo): http://pastebin.com/bvVrLNWV
Tombstone (MediaInfo): http://pastebin.com/9XrvDg9s

XBMC Log: http://pastebin.com/fLxzFikq
Syslog: http://pastebin.com/ZTd9gH6V

My CrashReporter stuff is *still* not showing up in private/var/mobile/library/logs/crashreporter; however, stuff is showing up in private/var/logs/CrashReporter, pasted below --- and I note that the filename, once again, says "LowMemory" -- I'm at a loss!

CrashReporter (LowMemory-2011-10-25-200851.plist, in above location): http://pastebin.com/YdGZNwbt

Thoughts on what I can try next? Am I ripping this files to be too large? (10 GB and 14 GB do not seem like a large 1080p MKV rip to me, but am I way out in left field with that assumption?)

Many thanks for your continued assistance!

SM

EDIT: Something finally showed up in the mobile/library/logs/crashreporter, but this does not correspond to the logs above --however, it corresponds with the same issue -- mkv playback crashing to front row:
