Buffering Issues ATV2
#1
Hello,

when I watch 720p mkv Files XBMC is constantly (about every 5 minutes) buffering.

To rule out a misconfigured ATV2 i've restored and jailbreaked it fresh.

System Info:
Apple TV2 ( iOS 4.3 - ATV2 4.2.2 - 8F305)
XBMC Nightly 31. October
Platform: Darwin iOS (11.0.0 AppleTV2,1). Built on Oct 31 2011 (Git:20111030-28b4457)

Install method from Wiki

Network Info:
Windows 7 PC -> Gigabit Ethernet -> Switches > Gibabit Ethernet -> ATV2 > HDMI > Samsung TV

Media Server:
Windows 7 PC sharing via SMB

XBMC.log
Mediainfo 720p DTS MKV
Mediainfo 720p AC3 MKV

Hopefully you can help.
Thank you in advance

Are you accessing the 720p files via WiFi? if so that may be your issue. If you aren't on a wifi 'N' you will most likely get buffering, especially if you are sharing that wifi with other devices in your house.

I hooked my AppleTV 2 up to a hardline and my buffering issues went away.

Also if your 720p files aren't H.264.. you will most likely get stuttered playback.

Try adding an advancedsetttings.xml file and include the entry:

Code:
<network>
    <cachemembuffersize>5242880</cachemembuffersize>
</network>

I'm running wireless G and this has allowed me to watch 720 with no more buffering issues.

For more on Advanced Settings, see here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Adv...ttings.xml

Good Luck!

You have thumbnail extraction on. Try turning it off like mentioned here:

i have many buffering problems too...

I resolve this problems edited my smb.conf from my samba server and added this two lines :

kernel oplocks = No
oplocks = No

Restart the samba and the buffer problems disapears on my ATV2 Smile

Thank you for the quick replys

@ubermac
My network is wired (as stated above)

@stolie
Thank's for the tipp with the entry in the advancedsettings.xml
I've tried various chachesizes (5 MB, 10 MB, 30 MB) but regardless the buffering issues are the same.
When turning on debugging view on the top left of the screen there's about 65 to 75 MB of memory used - despite modified cachsize

Line 407 - First Buffering

@Memphiz
I've disabled thumbnailextraction > still buffering
to rule out the AC3 stream i've made a separte mkv without any audiostream
http://pastebin.com/YQPsJKCG

Line 507 Playback begins
Just a little buffering at the beginning of the movie
but then it works like a charm

> so buffering is definitely an AC3/DTS related problem

@Nasp
I'm using a Windows 7 PC as the media source
there are limited options to manipulate smb settings

----

Streaming via UPNP works perfect without any buffering.
I've installed TVersity on my Windows 7 Media Source.
The only disadvantage is that subtitles that are not embedded in the mkv can't be used.

There the only solution might be to use a UPNP Server that is capable of injecting the subtitles in the stream so XBMC thinks they are embedded.
When i find a suitable solution i'll report back.

Could you try FTP? Filezilla has a nice server application for windows... If I remember correctly it should run just fine over FTP, and you should get your subtitles and junk as well I believe.

EDIT: Here's the link http://filezilla-project.org/download.php?type=server

Liikuvate how is your audio output set on ATV? I just had it on HDMI and once I changed that to Optical/Coax I did get some significant improvements in the play even though I don't have optical/coax even connected to by ATV box.

Changing audio output to Optical/Coax in XBMC and switching to 16 bit audio in IOS didn't improve the buffering.

So I've installed Filzilla on my Windows 7 PC - no more buffering.

The problem might be a combination of SMB Sharing and DTS/AC3 audio.

Thanks for the help

Second that.

As wierd as it may seems, I am also experiencing the same buffering issues with SMB and DTS/AC3. UPnP works fine.

(wired, nightly 7.nov, atv 4.3, time capsule)

I've found a UPNP Media Server who supports subtitles.
http://www.serviio.org/

http://www.serviio.org/index.php?option=...icle&id=33

On first startup let serviio detect xbmc as media renderer.
It's important to change the renderer profile from Generic to anything else (eg. WDTV Live).
Than add the source and enable transcoding.

Works like a charm.
