eskro Wrote:cant base your decision on that threat,,,
user doesnt even provide which HDTV he's using,,,
example, HTPC's + LCD 120Hz HDTV's dont get along,,,
trust me, i know that,,,
i had to disable the 120Hz feature of my Samsung HDTV to get %100 stutter free playback!!

another issue might be his NAS,,,
is he trying to play 1080P via wifi?
or its a wired conection?
he should try to play the faulty MKV locally on his C drive and see if it play well,,,

2 Questions for ya:

1: What were the symptoms you had with your Samsung LCD with the 120Hz? I am looking to build a new HTPC as my ion is getting outdated and I want to be able to stream 3D blu ray's from my NAS and don't currently have the capability. I have 2 Samsung LED LCD's and notice when watching a TV show or movie in HD 120Hz that a couple times throughout I will get a very minor skip in video. Hardly noticeable but it bugs me, I always attributed it to the poor performance of the ION thinking it would go away with my next build but you're saying you think its more of an issue with HTPC's in general to LCD TV's? Thats interesting because my Boxee Box streams the same content from the NAS with no skips at all... Also I run Linux live on my ION and have always ran the latest beta's, currently on Eden RC2

2: Do you know if there are any plans to support the A6/A8 processors for Linux live? I really like this processor and board combo but don't want to run Windows on my HTPC at all. I only stream local content from my freenas box and run a few apps.

Thanks for any thoughts/help!

Question 1:
i've yet to pin point exactly why i get the same 'skipping' issue as you
when using the 120Hz feature of my Samsung LCD.
well, i know its frame rate related.
but yeah, i really believe its GPU driver related, and no matter if you use
ATI GPU or NVIDIA GPU...
as i owned both, and skipping issue occured no matter what..
i played with XBMC's video playback settings,
like 'sync playback to display' and 'A/V Sync Methods',
but in the END, it reduced the issue but it still there.

Are you running Windows or Linux? I still think its strange that my Boxee Box isn't skipping and its set to match the refresh rate of the content. Also did you have any input on the A6/A8 with XBMCubuntu Eden? I'm thinking about ordering all the parts from amazon and just trying it, if it doesn't work I have prime and can just return all the parts lol.

You can try the settings below:

If you get AMD APU, you can select "Smooth Playback" in CCC.

If you want to make life easier, you can install this $27 "GT520" in A6/A8 HTPC to run Linux....
>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC
>Simplify XBMC configurations
>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

In other words there is no current support for A6/A8 with xbmcbuntu 11.1?

I just ordered the following for my new setup:
MB: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005JI5...02_details
CPU: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055ZC...00_details
RAM: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037TO...01_details
CASE: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001H0B...03_details
COOLER:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6835185167

If I have to run windows that's fine I can set it up to auto boot to XBMC and I have a spare 120gb SSD I can throw in as well. I just really like running Linux Live as everything is pre compiled and you know it will work right out of the box. The main reason for me to upgrade is for 3D support and I want to use some more apps that my ion simply just struggles to run (pseudo TV, Emulators ect.).

Does the card you suggested stream 3D? I also use digital fiber for sound to my receiver so I'm not sure if that would take some tweaking in Linux or not as well.

Here is the full spec on it- GeForce GT 520.

XBMC+Windows 7 is as good as it get, and it can playback everything. You can customize XBMC startup with this guide- Customizing Windows for XBMC.

Then you don't need a PSU it comes with a 250w which is more than enough for the build.

Also as an update the current XBMCUbuntu does NOT fully support the A6/A8 APU chips. It will play 1080p video but there is tearing in the video playback. A couple options for those of you who don't want to run Windows like me:

Option 1: Build your own xbmc from scratch using xvba drivers following this guide. I did this install with my A8 and it worked great just used the 12.2 drivers instead of the 11.11 ones the guide suggests. Also depending on your sound output you may have to adjust a few settings as well. The downfall to this build is it has trouble with H264 content thats > 1.5 so anything you have thats 1.5+ will not play properly until ATI updates their driver.

Option 2: Purchase a supported pcie card. As a 2nd option I purchased this card and it works great with the latest Xbmcubuntu R2.If you buy this card you WILL need a bigger case. I wanted a little nicer case anyway so I purchased this Silverstone case. tons of space and great ventilation with the large fan on the front.

Hope this helps some people out.
