Hi,

I'm about to rip my DVD collection to my hard drive. I have about 800 DVD's and would like your thoughts on the best software/hardware.

There are many solutions but im leaning towards somethng that can batch convert ( I have 2 drives and a USB external already) and something that will keep the quality reasonably high whilst not wasting space.

I'm going to keep all the disks so exact copies arnt necessary.

Any thoughts/experiences?

- SD Material, 700MB, 95% of Original DVD Quality

I ripped my collection mostly with DVDFabDecrypter (or DVDShrink in the beginning) to the disk.
For very few DVDs with extremely well done Extras I simply stored the ISOs away without further touching them. But those were 1 out of 100 movies, the other ones I just wanted to keep the main movie.

Then conversion with Handbrake, but not using a target size. I choose the "High Profile", add the audio streams and subtitles I want and save as mkv, usually resulting in files between 1 and 2 GB (depending on the number of audiostreams and the movie itself).

I changed the audio streams in Handbrake to MP3 for movies with mostly dialoge or comedy. For action movies etc I used the original AC3 or DTS streams.
