Wild FPS on XBMC menus
#1
Hi guys,
I'm having this problem since I installed XBMC on Ubuntu minimal.
I have a Fusion setup and the problem is that while I'm navigating the menus or even just hanging in there, XBMC takes approx. 30% of my CPU.
What seems a bit odd is that in the System Information screen I see that the FPS is fluctuates between ~100 to ~240.
I don't see the same behavior when running Windows 7 on the same machine and I don't like the waste of CPU cycles, hence, power.
So, is there any way to limit the FPS on XBMC menus to my refresh rate which is 50Hz?

I'm using the Confluence theme.

I think we're going to need some more info before we can help (apologies if it's obvious, but I'm not familiar with Fusion).

Which Ubuntu release?
Which XBMC version (Dharma, pre-Eden)?

My suspicion would be that it's the video drivers for Ubuntu - my menus were incredibly slow until I installed the restricted nVidia drivers.

Sorry for the lack of info.
My setup:
AMD Zacate/Fusion E350
Ubuntu 11.04
ATI Catalist drivers 11.10
XBMC is pre-Eden compiled from Lars Op De Kamp git.

@bobo1on1, isn't vsync related only to playing videos?
I already tried that without any luck, though.

@ned Scott, I wasn't familiar with this feature and it's seems too good to ignore it with my system, so I'll turn it on.
But, I believe that it's only a plaster for my problem and the real solution for it.

Vsync is related to OpenGL video rendering, so it applies to XBMC's menu and video.
The reason that the fps is so high is because there's no vsync.

Just to be clear.
Do you mean to enable VSync at the driver's level or at XBMC level?

"let application decide" on driver level and always enable in xbmc

OR:
always on driver level
