Can I point my movie data to another source?

Got a problem, I can scrape my movie folder with my smb share from a nas.....but I can't actually watch them (mem overload shutdown), I can watch my files fine if I share them from my nas via upnp but I can't scrape them. So is there a way I can just point the upnp share to the media info from the smb share?

No, I'm afraid not.

The library needs to have some way of uniquely identifying a media file, and the way it does this is the URL to the file. The problem is that with uPnP the URLs are dynamic and may change from session to session. That means there is no way for XBMC to reliably connect some media froma uPnP server with an entry in the library.

If SMB sharing is crashing your NAS something is wrong with the NAS, as that's a basic function you'd expect all NASs to do. It might be worth checking if there is a firmware upgrade for your NAS.

Cool, thanks for the answer. Turns off I needed to deselect "produce thumbnails" and the smb works fine.
