Can The ATV 2 play 1080p content at 720p if it's H264?
#1
Hey Everyone,

Quick question here. I know the Apple TV 2 supports 720p and not 1080p, but I have heard a few people say it can play the 1080p content, but it will scale it down to 720p? So if the movie I'm trying to watch is 1080p, but is H264 will my ATV 2 play it?

I am not concerned if it lowers it to 720p from 1080p. I just want to watch the movie and have good quality which is still great to me at 720p.

Thanks in advance.

It will play 1080P (I have a few myself) but it will only output 720P. So you can watch it but it will be "downscaled" to 720P.
Set Up
Raspberry Pi running Raspbmc - XBMC 12.2
40" Samsung ES6800 LED Smart 3D 1080P TV
Onkyo HTS3405 5.1 DD True HD and DTS-HD Surround Sound
ReadyNAS Duo with 4TB (2 x 2TB X-RAID) Western Digital Caviar Green using NFS

ATv1 does not have any issues playing 1080p or 720p H264 formats. But it has buffering issues trying to play 720p or higher xvid formats.

Although it outputs 720p, is the apple tv able to handle raw 1080p blu-ray rips (in mkv containers)?
Does it handle H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2?
