Someone i know was going to get one of these but he needs to know how fast his internet connection has to be in order to stream and watch movies ok

I have a 10mbs connection but HD still lags at time.

You don't need an internet connection at all to use an ATV2 (beyond initial installation). It all depends on what you want to do with it. Even with a slow internet connection you can playback local network files just fine.
