VGA, HDMI, and modelines
#1
I just bought a new TV to replace my almost 10-year-old 26" Olevia model. I used the VGA connection and a custom modeline with the Olevia to get it to display the TV's native resolution, and I believe I had refresh rates of 30 and 60.

Unfortunately, no matter what I do with the new TV, the VGA connection will only give me a refresh rate of 60hz at 1920x1080. That's all the EDID gives me, and none of the standard HDTV modelines work at any other refresh rate.

I've also noticed that for this particular TV, when in VGA mode, most of the TV's picture controls are unavailable (including the 120hz motion "smoothing").

I'm hoping that getting a gfx card with HDMI will solve my problems. Does anyone have experience with this? Should I expect that the HDMI connection will allow me to use refresh rates closer to 23.937 and 59.97 and get judder-free playback, even if the VGA connection doesn't?

This will be my first experience with HDMI. Thanks in advance!

I can't answer your question, but given that VGA is 25 years old by now, I'd say chances are good.
