Library Question

Total newb here. I've searched and I'm not seeing the answer, apologies in advance if it's an obvious answer.

I have a root folder which contains several seasons of a tv show. This particular program was originally broadcast in weekly 30 minute segments, four or more of which would constitute one full story. The stories have been released singly on DVDs.

I've grouped each story into its own folder. Some folders contain an avi file for each episode, while some folders contain one DVD rip from my own collection of the full story - so the one DVD rip contains four+ episodes.

In TVDB I see each episode is listed individually. How on earth do I sort this out so that in XBMC I can easily see "A - this season 12, episode 3" versus "B this is a DVD of season 12 episodes 4 through 8"

What's more important:

1.) Having a list of individual seasons and episodes?

2.) Having the ability to use the menus and special features of the DVD structure?

If 1 is more important, then it's pretty easy, use something like MakeMKV (free for DVD rips) and break the DVD down by episode.

If 2 is more important, then it's not so easy.

A good discussion can be found here:
