My htpc motherboard has gone faulty and i may have to buy another make of motherboard, is there a way of backing up my xbmc or settings so i don't have to rescrape or whatever.

Look into the wiki for info regarding your userdata folder. That holds all your XBMC settings and databases. If all the paths to your sources are the same with the new build you should not have any issues.
