i've posted a patch on sf's patches tracker that allows a share to have a custom thumbnail. i've got a ton of xbms shares that all show up with the hard drive icon. this patch adds a <thumbnail> xml node to the xboxmediacenter.xml file for each <bookmark>, which will override the default icon when the share is displayed in a virtualdirectory.

i'm creating this thread for improvements on the idea, or criticism like "you could already do that!". here's what it looks like using a couple of the icons from flask:
