I think you can fool ME into scraping the info and such but you risk fooling XBMC too. In other words: XBMC might try to play the "fake"file instead of the movie inside the rar resulting in an error.

Just out of curiosity: what would be your argument not to rename the files?

The tools in the link(s) can alter file names and extensions (so .r01 could be renamed to .rar)
