thinking of getting a tv card and using xbmc for a pvr but dont know where to start . any help please ?

can it be as simple as installing a tuner card , getting a pvr version of xbmc and then it`ll be there in xbmc setting to configure ? or does the card conect to a freeview box for the tv signal (s-video and l&r audio cable) . or does it work both ways
