Linux/Ubuntu virgin (yikes)...xbmcbuntu build compability?
#1
so I have one or two questions...

I am currently building my first HTPC (yay!) using this mobo: ASRock A55M-HVS which has hdmi out and audio pass through (so i can send a toslink from tv to home theatre)
the reason I mention is that I've seen some places that some motherboards or cpu's (AMD A4-3300) will not play nicely with xbmcbuntu..how can i find this out?

Also..I've near no experience with linux or ubuntu (i've dabbled in modifying/working apk's in android...so yeah, i have no experience, heh)...coming from a straight windows experience, will i be able to "handle" xbmcbuntu without a problem? Does it just boot straight into xbmc and looks similar to the windows program? or are there commands i need to be aware of?

from what i read, i can use LiLi to load up a bootable USB and install xbmcbuntu...so should i ignore the instructions here: http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW...thumbdrive ? and just use LiLi?
From a fresh/new SSD, i could theoretically just build my htpc, and on the first boot, go right into the bootable USB, install xbmcbuntu and then be done? no need to install anything else and when i boot up my htpc it goes right into xbmc?

finally, will fly remotes work? I'm thinking of the ipazzport 2.4 mini ( http://www.amazon.com/iPazzPort-2-4GHz-W...G7CLP9D7Q3 )...so can i just plug it in the htpc on first boot and it'll be recognize when i try to install everything?

okay, so i have more than one or two...but it's mostly clarification questions...sorry for the "newbieness"...
thanks for the help

use this xbmcbuntu version: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=134252
it should boot straight to xbmc and should be ready to go

with program you use to create the USB stick does not really matter. xbmc itself is the same as on windows(and most other platforms for that matter)

thanks..appreciate it!
wish me luck when my parts come Smile

oh just forgot to add...will the fly remote work out of the box? are there drivers needed or anything else or is it just plug and play like it would be on windows? I kind of need a keyboard in order to install it and such =-P

sorry, I don't know that remote, but most can be made working, just a matter of how easy it is Smile

okay..no worries...

to start, i'll probably just plug in an old school keyboard and mouse and then once i'm in xbmc, i'll try it out...
thanks for the help

for the iPazzPort remotes I strongly encourage to buy "direct" as amazon is plagued with bogus devices:

I have this remote and really like it, http://goo.gl/XlSJj
the multi touch trackpad and full f keys is great and I still havent' had to recharge it once since i bought it.
Yours should work just fine.
You can use unetbootin or linuxlive usb creator to create the bootable usb drive to install from.
I didnt know anything (still dont) about linux and sure if I can manage you can.
The install is hard to see sometimes based on the resolution of the isntaller, you can try to move the windows to see the buttons if the tv doesnt scale right or use the fixed dpi install.
when prompted for the to logon to xbmc or xbmcubuntu, just remember to logoff whenever u go into the xbmcbuntu desktop and logon to 'xbmc', the media center app, otherwise on subsequent boots it'll boot into the desktop. Coming from Windows, this was something that was foreign to me and took me and a friend a while to figure out.
