I believe the output of HDMI is effectively perfect (within 1 lsb of a dedicated pattern generator).
Are you using a computer monitor? (that seems likely if you are getting full range RGB by default).
Can you report the output of "tvservice -s" when a video is playing?
I'm not sure what the problem could be. Can you try a different TV or monitor?
