On OpenELEC you don't need sudo, just run the commands without it.

Ah yes, I forgot about that.

Anyway, now I just get

root / # tvservice -d /boot/edid.dat
Nothing written!

I thought perhaps /boot is wrong as there doesn't appear to be such a directory
