I have installed XBMCbuntu on my HTPC, and HD playback works like a charm. Audio playback is weird though. The "3d visualizer" in the back is not smooth, and when last.fm photos plugin kicks in the pictures are not moving smoothly as well. There's no choppiness, it just speeds up every now and then, and slows during other moments. Framerate is not consistent I think, but HD (720p mp4) playback is fine.

AMD FX4100 + Gigabyte MB
4GB RAM
Raden HD5450
