Openelec xbmc with Central mediaserver
#1
Hi,

I plan to have a central Windows MediaServer with TV cards running ForTheRecord. It also contains the HDDs with all my music and movies.

As thin clients I plan to use RasperryPi with openelec.

- can anyone recommend a decent media server software for Windows that will best serve the openelec clients?
- maybe a software that can also scan ForTheRecord's 4tr metadata files or where I can easily write a custom scanner plugin?
- will the xbmc plugin also allow playing the PVR contents via DLNA or will it need file share access?

Thanks!

XBMC works best using file share access (Windows Sharing/SMB/CIFS/SAMBA). UPnP/DLNA sources can't be scanned into XBMC's library and use cover art and thumbnails since UPnP uses dynamic file paths.

I believe the PVR client handles accessing the data, but I'm not certain.

Can multiple xbmc clients access a shared central video/music library. Or does every one needs to scan it all?

See MySQL (wiki) for a shared library setup.

I was browsing thru the Wiki about sharing and saw the pathsubstitution topics. Just curious: Can the Pathsubstitution thing also be used to remap UNC paths to UPNP/DLNA paths?

I don't believe so, since UPnP/DLNA paths are dynamic.
