Hi Guys,

I'm a recent convert to XBMC and absolutely love it. I have a small issue and was wondering if any advise is available. Please note this is the first time i'm posting.

How to make XBMC display each source folder as a separate link under movies/videos?

XBMC natively displays all paths as one single source and I cant seem to separate them so I can segregate the "Comic shows", "Kids moves", "home videos" "etc" without having to troll thou a lot of movies/videos

Hope the below illustration makes sense as I could not paste a screenshot :-)

as displayed on the home screen....
Pictures.......Videos.................. Movies..............TV shows...... Music

"Comedy" "Kids" "Home Videos"
D\ stand-up Comedy D:\ Kids Movies E:\ Home Videos

Thanking you guys in advance for your kind help.

Cheers,
LP

Welcome to the forum.

XBMC works as a library and not as a folder system.
Basically everything you scan into the library goes into a database.
This database can then be filtered by XBMC by for example genre or studio, actor, video resolution or whatever info is available.

This is a much more flexible and ultimately more fun way to handle your media.

The best part... You can make your own filters, playlists, sets, ect. Even stuff like, make your own fake tv channels with your media.

There is loads of documentation in the wiki. And there is videos on youtube ect. So i suggest you start here and then just ask if you get stuck.
Btw. Nodes will allow you to filter by folder as well, so that is easy for stuff that is already in folders (New feature on Frodo). And some skins will allow you to put these in the main menu on home. And if your really want to separate kids stuff i suggest using a second profile.

Easiest thing is to move all your various folders (D:\Stand-up Comedy D:\Kids Movies E:\Home Videos) to a single "Videos" folder and add the D:\Videos\ path to the XBMC and not the individual folders. That way when you navigate to the D:\Videos folder, you'll see Stand-up Comedy, Kids Movies and Home Videos.

@Philmatic:

A single video files folder is a good strategy only on condition (rarely met in real life) that you use a single scraper for all your videos. If you use several scrapers (say one for movies, one for tvshows, one for anime movies, another for anime tvshows, etc etc) it makes more sense to map scrapers to folders. I know this is less than elegant, and I would eve argue that it is a recipe for separating content which, logically, belongs together. But this is the way XBMC works, and unfortunately it cannot change.
Using skins: customized Xonfluence, Unity, Amber, Estuary.
