Geniatech ATV1200 and XBMC hardware decoding
#46
So as an update to my 1080p BDMV playback issues with MX Player and Android Movie Player, it turned out WiFi was the problem.

After reading Darjk post, I decided to try 20121210 again, and video was still stuttering, so I switched to ethernet, and boom, no stutter.

Unfortunatelly, I still can't get AMLPlayer to play anything with multiple XBMC builds.

I tried 3 builds on both 20121210 and 20130108 firmware:
- the MYGICA build (AMLPlayer is not the default player, so you need to manually select it, otherwise it uses the DVDPlayer with this build) XBMC crushes when using AMLPLayer
- the XIOS build, XBMC also crushes, but I expected it, as there is a check for Pivos hardware in the XBMC code
- GBox midnight build, from the first post in this tread, also crushes when trying to use AMLPlayer

I also noticed my video playback would lockup after few minutes over ethernet with MX Player or Movie Player on 20121210, don't have this issue on 20130108.

The good news, I am very surprised how well the latest XBMC nightly without AMLPlayer handles 720p video streams, and that is what I primarly use XBMC for, so I decided to for now stay at 20130108 and use MX Player for my 1080p BDMVs over ethernet, and I am using latest XBMC nighlty with no hardware decoding for plugings.

I have to say the playback experience is improving with Android.

are there any links for these custom builds Smile

No Smile But anyone can build from Pivos branch at https://github.com/Pivosgroup/xbmc

In answer to people asking about 3TB drives. Mygica 510B plays movies via usb.

I am using a Seagate 3TB Expansion.

If you are still on the latest build do you mind trying this xbmc build
http://androidtvbox.us/topic/xbmc-frodo-...-advanced/

from what I understand this is supposed to be a built that works with the update binaries

thanks

Thanks for confirming mate, heading out to buy a new external HDD today so wanted to get the largest supported by the ATV1200.

I gave this a try and it didn't work, however I also didn't copy his build.prop file either - had a look at it and compared it and there only seemed to be 1 property that was added in relation to video playback which was setting the buffer level to 0.02 or something.

However in doing all this I've come to realise that simply flashing new firmware doesn't seem to properly install a 'clean slate'. I found myself having to reset/clear all cache, data, media, etc and then install the new firmware for it to work properly which is something I didn't do with the 20130107 firmware. It might work, but it would require an equivalent build.prop for Geniatech devices and I've run out of time as I'm giving this android box to a mate of mine today. Will hopefully buying myself another android box for myself soon but going to give it another month to see what happens.
Wish you all the best! Smile

Last Edit (posting under android):
Okay so after a lot of testing tonight I've concluded that the latest firmware simply does not work what so ever with XBMC. To get XBMC working fairly well do the following.
1) Go into recovery mode (reset + power on)
2) Install the 20121210 SPI update
3) install the 20121210 Firmware update
4) Install the update_patch_xbmc.img (download from http://www.oketuf.com/update_patch_XBMC.zip and rename from *.zip to *.img)
5) Reboot (may need to reboot twice)
6) Install Mygica build of XBMC (version 12 Beta 3) (http://www.oketuf.com/MYGICA%2025-DEC%20...-debug.zip)
7) Should now be able to play HD movies in XBMC with hardware decoding. Still having issues with my aspect ratio though? Will post screenshots soon.
8) Change permissions on /sys/class/video/axis from rw-rw-r to rw-rw-rw (thanks Davilla) to enable changing the aspect, this still doesn't fix the above issue though as even if you zoom out it seems to be cropped.
Optional-----
9) Install Startup Manager (free) - Under user: Disable Youtube. Under System: disable OOBE, Contacts, preload installer, Phone, and anything else you don't need. Under Custom, add XBMC if you want it to boot straight into it.
10) Install Build Prop Editor, tweak settings such as the status bar at the bottom, set hw.nophone to true, etc.....

Time to research this aspect ratio problem. Hopefully this feedback is of some use.

Hi, got my box today. Is that the best setup for xbmc at the moment?

As far as I know. Apparently the latest firmware with the nightly build of XBMC runs videos nicely up to 720p but I personally have not had such luck (just tried latest firmware.. again.. and had issues downloading from Google playstore).

Also bought a brand new 3TB drive for it. It picked up all the directories but out of a few hundred files, it only picked up 9 and I have no idea why. That's why I reinstalled the latest firmware hoping to fix that. I guess for peace of mind assume that this device only supports up to 2TB.

Nightly build?? xda nightlies don't have aml enabled so that can't be right unless you are talking about another build. Any link?

No, that's why I said up to 720 as is not using hardware decoding, just (optimized) cpu decoding which (apparently) the latest android builds are capable of doing. 1080p will still stutter.. again going by other feedback. My only success with XBMC is following the steps I outlined above.

Hey mate, did you have USB Debugging enabled by any chance to get it working?

The drive mounts okay and it can see the drive storage size and free space, but its only viewing 5 directories and maybe 10 files out of 1000+

My best bet is that the ATV1200 (20121210 firmware) is struggling with the AF partition alignment used in the external seagate enclosure.

New firmware released today:

SPI - http://www.geniatech.net/down-eng/upgrad...130115.zip
Firmware - http://www.geniatech.net/down-eng/upgrad...normal.zip

Haven't had a chance to test it yet.

edit:
Firmware file comparison for anyone interested: FirmwareFileComparison

Main changes seem to be to audio codecs, and added support for DTS HD codec.
Removed google WideVine service.
Libamplayer.so was updated which can only be a good thing.
Added support to StageFright
Added a few more usb mode switches (3 new devices supported?)

Anyway, hopefully someone can try it out sooner and report back - won't be able to test it until the weekend.

updatet to 130115:

-looks very fast & stable
-no ntfs-support (have to install paragon-ntfs)

-XBMC Version http://www.pivosforums.com/XIOS_DS/XBMC/...010813.zip is working, AML-Player is starting, videofiles with all sounds(DTS,DD,DTS-HD) are playing (my Pioneer VSX-921 is switching the display !yeah!Cool), but now the problem: the file is playing, you can hear wonderful DTS-sound, but the screen is only black Sad if you press a remote key, the player-menu is visible. You can use the player, no crash, but a black screen.... Does anyone have any ideas ?Huh

@Xardos:

so DTS(-HD) passthrough over HDMI works with Stock Player?

Videos in Stockplayer are played with downmixed stereo only (no passthrough-setting-options in stockplayer available)

If there is a solution for the black screen problem in xbmc (runs so fast), I would be perfectly happy...
