Hi there guys, complete newbie here!

I just wanted to ask what the cheapest device was on to which I can run xmbc...whilst it it directly connected to the TV....also a device which I can have addons

Looking at Apple TV 2nd gen. It's around 200 plus....

What is there that's cheaper

you can always get a used pc for 5$ as long as it has an output that is compatible with you tv pritty much anything goes

you can also buy one of those raspberry pi computers

everything can run the non-os specific add-ons, but not everything has the power needed to run everything smothly, it depends on what kind of add-on you need

Although it you get a Raspberry Pi, and have a sufficiently new TV, then the CEC (aka Anynet or various other names) integration means you don't need to get a remote: you just carry on using the TV remote.

Personally I'm not a big fan of using XBMC over wireless, especially if you have 1080p movies. You could get a USB/Ethernet dongle, but I' e read a few posts where people have bad issues getting the drivers to work. For a newbie I would recommend a wired connection.

Thanks for all the replies. In terms of raspberry pi, does it make any difference to xbmc if it is 256mb or 512mb

well the 256MB (model A) doesn't have a ethernet port
you wanted to watch stuff online right, guess you can get an usb card but then you don't have any port for a keyboard forcing you to use an network remote
also i'm not sure you can run HD with only 256mb

surgest you get the 512MB (model B)
if anything to be on the safe side
