I'll throw in my support to say I'd like to see this (or similar) supported. It would be an evolutionary step for animated fanart.

Don't really like fanart, but the OPs poster example is great and of course the simple, few frames looping gif animation would only trigger after a sec or two on selected poster so it probably wouldn't be too demanding on hardware. I think the new apple tvOS parallax effect is also a simple animation and it looks good, but they probably use some proprietary format other then gif.
