Linux No HDMI video output via A/V receiver
#1
Hi everyone,

I've installed XBMCbuntu 11.0 on a newly built HTPC and am having issues getting video signal to my Sony TV over HDMI, via my Yamaha A/V receiver. The boot screen/BIOS etc shows fine, but as soon as the OS kicks in the screen on the TV goes completely black or gives an "Invalid display signal" error. When connected via HDMI directly to the TV the video displays fine.

Intel Core i3 3225
ASRock B75M-ITX Motherboard
Using on-board graphics/HDMI out.

As far as I can tell it seems to be due to a difference in EDID from the TV when connected via the amp/receiver versus when connected directly. I have already done a lot of research into similar issues and tried installing various extra drivers/packages, customising my /etc/X11/xorg.conf in a dozen different ways, tweaking video settings on the receiver, etc. The below logs are ALL without an xorg.conf file.

xbmc.log after boot (connected via HDMI to the receiver --> TV):
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1557030/

Xorg.0.log after boot (connected via HDMI to the receiver --> TV):
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1557033/

Xorg.0.log after boot connected directly to the TV using HDMI:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1557034/

get-edid output connected directly to the TV using HDMI:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1557035/

get-edid output connected via HDMI to the receiver --> TV:
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1557037/

As you can see the Vtimings are off when connected via the receiver. The Interlace flag is also on.

I have tried copying the EDID response when directly connected to the TV to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file but this hasn't helped.

I'm hoping the combined experience of the XBMC forums can help me out here as I'm at my wits end. I was hoping XMBCbuntu would be the end of my home theatre woes but I'm not off to a good start!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Ben

I added a customised .conf file to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ with the modelines from the Sony TV EDID plus a modeline for 1920x1080@24. I've set the 1920x1080@60 mode to "preferred".

I can sometimes get video to work by manually changing the output mode to 1920x1080@24 and back to 1920x1080@60 again like so:

export DISPLAY=:0
xrandr --output HDMI3 --mode 1920x1080@24
xrandr --output HDMI3 --mode 1920x1080@60

But if I boot into XBMC with just the TV connected like this it seems to hang at the initial XBMC logo. I have to connect a second monitor to get it to work.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi,

Updating to kernel 3.7.5 solved this problem for me.

Thanks for the tip. I never did resolve the issue.

In the end I just installed Windows and had everything up-and-running perfectly in about 10 minutes.

It's a shame because I really wanted to use Linux. Maybe down the line when I've forgotten how stressful it was I'll give XBMCbuntu another try.
