The issue is the XVBA repo. It breaks aticonfig (symlinks aren't created) and results in the "please reinstall the driver".

Created another ticket.

You need to report that to the ppa itself or to wsnipex, trac is only used for XBMC related bugs, this is not (if it is a bug at all)

The workaround for this is http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=XBM...u_specific

Hello

I have the same problem as doverosx using amd HD4770.

After installing xbmcbuntu beta 2 with lubuntu 12.04, everthing works fine. Upgrading xbmc version through mainstream or xvba repos kills amd driver.

I'm not and advanced linux user so I'm having trouble solving this.

the Xvba PPA does not do anything regarding drivers, so this is not true.

To me.....after updating with both the main and the xba repos, my resolution is locked to 640x480 and, when I launch XBMC, the message stating OpenGL drivers are needes appears

To me making claims without any information is a problem which no one can help with

read this http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=34655 and try again.

Distro: xbmcbuntu-12.00-beta1-repack.iso
Architecture: i686
CPU: AMD Athlon 3250e
GPU: ATI RV710 [Radeon HD 4330]

I'm experiencing the same issues as doverosx and raven. So I did a clean install again of xbmcbuntu-12.00-beta1-repack.iso. First thing I did this time was sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade and rebooted. After rebooting I get the message "XBMC needs hardware accelerated OpenGL rendering. Install an appropriate graphics driver." Just to be clear ppa:wsnipex/xbmc-xvba has not yet been added.

sudo apt-get upgrade --simulate http://pastebin.com/C2CaZ5zE

You guys are updating your gfx driver with those commands and obviously breaking it. go moan at AMD for screwing you so hard!

So you see

The following packages will be upgraded:
**snip** fglrx-amdcccle-updates fglrx-updates **snip**

The solution is to downgrade the driver to your previous version manually

@uNiversal
You are absolutely right. I wasn’t at home and couldn’t give you the right information to help.
My free time to test is very short but I could manage to solve the problem last night.

The solution is to downgrade the driver to your previous version.

Alternatively try: (the ppa contains only fglrx-legacy) and pray it works.

Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx-amdcccle-updates fglrx-updates
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96/fglrx
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install fglrx-legacy

You are right again. Using the command sequence posted before, the entire system was upgraded. That includes xorg and ati driver, causing the driver and, consequently, xbmc failing to start.

To solve the problem, for now, just skipped the upgrade and installed the xbmc-xvba version. However this is just a temporary solution because I want the system upgraded. Before finding this solution, tried the makson96 repo but I believe is repo only works for 12.10 version, not the 12.04. At least for me it didn’t work.

Just an alert. On your command list, you upgrade the system after purging all the drivers. This will probably upgrade them again to the problematic version.

Thank you for your help

Well the commands are a copy and paste (IIRC ppl have failed to use that PPA even on 12.10), Im not even a ATI user here so at best my advice is to block the updates on drivers and go moan to AMD.
I removed the commands since they are for 12.10 and so far no one has come back with a working install using that either.

My interest here was purely to get you guys going with a working install (target achieved) and that's where my buck stops as I have 0 motivation for something which I dont have (AMD/ATI Gpu)

Its up to you guys to take it from here. I also updated my workaround http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid...pid1321752

@John Doe please update your post 8 to match!

Hi All,

Just thought I'd offer my experience on this one. I too had exactly the same symptom of the problem. On a fresh installation of XBMCbuntu V12 the xbmc would crash immediately upon logon and return me to the login screen. Logging into the xbmcbuntu windows interface worked fine. I have a Radeon ATI 3450 card. I tried installing the latest drivers from the ATI/AMD website but this didn't help.

I actually managed to work round the problem by installing Ubuntu 12.10 instead and then xbmc on top afterwards using apt-get. Having installed MythTV backend also I now have a working setup.

Not sure why this worked, given the diagnosis made earlier in the thread, but I can vouch that it does!

Cheers,
Kris.

Ubuntu 12.10 and ATI 3450 will NOT work out of the box. You'll need to use the fglrx-legacy ppa(which worked last time I tested it)

Not wanting to be argumentative, but it does! Here's a screenshot hopefully proving it. I've not installed anything extra drivers to make this work. The only software I've added is XBMC, MythTV and MySQL Workbench - and I would imagine that none of these would involve an update to the graphics drivers.

Happy to run any commands to verify what driver I'm running if that would would be useful...and if you can tell me what to run (Linux newb here, apologies!)
