oh... sorry.
the log showed that it was getting hung on one of my NFS drives.
I have this older WD Passport Drives, that will sometimes auto sleep mode (haven't figured out how to get it to stay on under linux).
the thing that was getting me (that I submitted the post) was that I could still see my files when going to browse. It's a weird drive.
I did a restart of the NFS on the remote computer, and everything is good!
